Mets, Eduardo Escobar agree to two-year contract

The New York Mets and Eduardo Escobar have agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract, pending a physical, per Jon Heyman.

Escobar is set to turn 33 years old in early January and is coming off a season he split between the Diamondbacks and Brewers. In total, he made 599 plate appearances and hit .253/.314/.472 with 28 home runs and a 107 wRC+ this year.

Aside from a downright miserable short season in 2020, that’s more or less the hitter he has been in recent years, as he combined for a .270/.327/.501 line and a 112 wRC+ with 58 home runs. And in each of the most recent three full seasons, he’s finished with at least 3.0 fWAR.

I can see this being another Carlos Baerga-type signing, as well as similar to any one of a number of other such signings by the Mets since then.

Does he crush lefties? Otherwise the Mets already have one Jeff McNeil.

Apparently they just signed Mark Canha as well. Neither one is a bad signing but I doubt that 32-year-old hitters are the new market inefficiency.

#2 he’s a switch hitter who had an .877 OPS against LHP last year, and .882 in 2019. For his career his OPS is about 50 points higher against lefties than against righties.

Mets teammates and fans will like Escobar unless he falls off a cliff.

Plays hard, great attitude, teammates love him. He's probably going to decline some, and has trouble laying off high fastballs. But he's a good player.

They just signed Starling Marte too

Marte too now — 78/4.

Further it's not like McNeil, Davis, Cano is a tough rotation to crack. Given Davis's glove, I assume that Escobar will be the main 3B unless Cano has a hot start. It strongly suggests Villar won't be back though and makes a JD Davis trade more likely. 2/$20 for Escobar certainly bodes well for Chris Taylor. I sorta expected the Cubs to grab Escobar for "a little too much", maybe now they'll go for Villar who's probably a better fit for the bench anyway (and cheaper).

Canha: Over 2019-21, he's produced at a 4 WAR/650 pace although just 2.5 WAR in 2021. He's either pretty good (TZ) or terrible (DRS) in the OF. Statcast says overall average which is roughly an average RF and, like Nimmo, won't embarrass himself in CF. If JD Davis is mostly bumped out of the IF then I suppose the Canha signing makes a Conforto return less likely. 2/$26.5 for Canha apparently which looks about right.

Age concerns are obvious but they're short deals, both guys will make useful bench players in 2023 if 2022 doesn't go well and I'm not aware they're blocking anybody. Fangraphs projects 1.9 WAR for Escobar and 2.2 for Canha which seems like a reasonable use of $23 M for a rich team; that may not be true next year. Fangraphs is down on Castellanos (just 2.1) and doesn't like Conforto much more than Canha (2.5) so Marte is the only FA OF that fangraphs likes substantially more than Canha and I'm guessing he's fewer years, lower AAV than either Conforto or Castellanos. Oops, there's also Bryant but at just 2.7 and very expensive; and Schwarber at 2.6 and probably more expensive (and more upside) than Canha. Fangraphs is also very down on Baez at just 2 WAR -- a big crash in offense which is the influence of the horrible 2020.

All that said, Semien seemed the star FA that fit the Mets best and I thought Cohen wanted to make a big splash. Still plenty of good pitchers out there though.

No reason to think the infield is now full. Escobar makes an excellent superutility player, a la Taylor who you mentioned as a comp.

Take that Steven Matz’ agent!

Marte is a good signing for 2022 but it's going to be ugly later in the contract. That won't matter if the Mets spend.
   12. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: November 27, 2021 at 07:45 AM (#6054757)
And none of these guys cost the Mets a draft pick, right? I guess they are really trying to load up in this year’s draft.
   13. The Duke Posted: November 27, 2021 at 08:54 AM (#6054759)
Yeah, they got an unexpected one from Thor’s signing and will get one from Conforto. Most of the rumors have them avoiding free agents with QOs
   14. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: November 27, 2021 at 09:01 AM (#6054760)
And they get an extra pick from Rocker not signing this past year.
   15. asinwreck Posted: November 27, 2021 at 09:53 AM (#6054769)
The Rocker pick would be the one they would lose if they signed a player who'd been extended a QO.

Unless the Mets make a deal this week, the local press should be able to fill the lockout weeks speculating on where Dom Smith, Jeff MacNeil, and JD Davis will wind up.

Gausman reportedly may sign in the next 24-hours and the Mets are supposedly heavily in the mix.
   17. The Duke Posted: November 27, 2021 at 11:33 AM (#6054781)
It’s not clear to me how this really moves the needle for them. Marte is a good sign but are the Mets really WS competitors over the next two years?
   18. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: November 27, 2021 at 11:38 AM (#6054783)
In the NL East, sure.

I mean, maybe not, but someone still has to play out there. If they weren’t going to resign Conforto, Pillar and Villar they had to pick up some competent bats to take their place.

The Mets play in NY, they should be a WS competitor every season.
