Mets extend spring training invite to Tim Tebow

The New York Mets just can’t quit Tim Tebow.

Despite hitting just .163 with four home runs in 77 games at Triple-A Syracuse in 2019, the Mets have extended a spring training invitation to the 32-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner. He’s one of eight non-roster invitees the club announced on Thursday.

Tebow begins his fourth full season in the Mets organization and owns a career batting line of .223/.299/.338 with 18 home runs and 327 strikeouts in 287 games. His 2019 season ended on July 21 with a laceration to his pinkie on his left hand. His 2018 season also ended early when he missed the final two months with a broken bone in his right hand.

Tebow, who works for the SEC Network as a football analyst during his baseball offseason, isn’t a legitimate prospect, given his age and lack of production. The Mets have received criticism in the past for giving Tebow playing time in the minors over other players who might actually help the Mets in the future.

Well, now’s the season for this sort of thing, I suppose…..

Is this fall the year that he needs to be added to the forty man roster or be subject to the Rule V draft?

Suddenly I feel a whole lot more supportive about cutting a few dozen minor league teams.

So, being the Mets you troll for spring training gate.

My recollection is that the consensus was that the Mets didn’t really have enough real prospects that Tebow was stealing playing time from anyone who deserved it.

That’s true of just about every team. The reality is that the vast majority of minor leaguers have no chance of reaching the majors. The backup Single A catcher is looking for a career as a coach or manager somewhere.

Tebow is an extreme case, but it's far from unheard of for a 30-something guy who will never sniff the majors and isn't even good enough for the high minors anymore to be kept around as a de facto coach/very occasional player. Tebow is a manager's dream as a clubhouse guy.

I'd invite him to spring training just to watch the steam shooting out of the Tebow-haters' ears.

But, no, he's done as a ballplayer, and should go home and spend more time with the wife. (So should we all, actually.)

I was going to say I had no desire to spend more time with Tim Tebow's wife, but then I Googled.

These days, regulars & MLB veterans play as few spring training road games as possible, including even the 15 mile jaunts down the road to the neighboring complex. Teams need filler to have enough players to field a team, especially early when 2 PA might be the limit for the “starters”. A spring training invite doesn’t mean a team is counting on the player.

I always despised Tebow during his football career. Wasn't that a thousand years ago? I can't imagine why anybody would give a flying #### one way or another about this anymore.

You’d be amazed. When Tebow showed up at JetBlue Park to play the Red Sox last year in spring training people were all kinds of excited.

The thing that has always struck me about Tebow is that he seems like a genuine person. You can agree or disagree with his religious stance but he seems like someone who actually conducts himself in a manner that you’d expect/want someone claiming to be religious to do. All the attention seems to be generated by others not by him.

i assumed Tebow the Met was a pet project of Sandy Alderson's so I'm a bit surprised this is still a thing now that Alderson has moved on.

As I joked in a very different context here the other day, I have pretty encompassing standards for who is a prospect. Accordingly, I hate that the Mets are taking up PA with this guy. (I also don’t begrudge Tebow for doing it - follow your dreams, guy.)

I admit that I was expect an Albright.

Was hoping he would make it to the big leagues, but he was just awful last year.

I'm guessing that the Mets continuing to give him opportunities is the result of a deal that he made with the devil.

Even after this comment, I too still expected Albright when I clicked.
