The Mets have accepted failure with their trade for Darin Ruf by designating the righty hitter for assignment, The Post has learned.
The Mets decided they would rather have Tim Locastro’s speed off the bench in a year when new rules are expected to enhance stolen bases over continuing to try to revive Ruf in New York.
The Mets currently owe Ruf $3.25 million – $3 million for 2023 and $250,000 as a buyout on a $3.5 million option for 2024.
They have until Monday to trade him and try to offset some of that money.
After that, Ruf would become a free agent and can then sign for the major league minimum, with the Mets responsible for the rest.

He was really bad with the Mets, and he's old and redundant, so this is fine ... but there's a good chance he can still put up an 800+ OPS if given the opportunity.
And it's not the Pirates! (Yet)
That disastrous run was only 74 PA.
In fairness to NYM, that "disaster" has continued for 35 PA this spring at 167/265/233.
Haven't checked his velocity or spin rate but I doubt they're encouraging.
(Today's episode of reading way too much into a tiny sample size is brought to you by ...)
so when he gets deranged about the occasional Met, I enjoy the heck out of it.
McCann (or "McCant," as he enjoyed saying at 2022 games) and Ruf were the chief targets of his wrath.
maybe there's something to be said for 'reading the room' meaning the fan base and deciding that dumping Ruf and keeping Locastro instead - while it probably means nothing to the final record - is encouraging to the diehards.
especially true because the previous Wilpon regime was perceived as always focusing on the bottom line.
dumping Ruf for Locastro costs the Mets some money. Cohen doesn't care, and he gains even more of the substantial good will he already has.
may the best 26-man roster win.
After Hoskins got hurt, I was kind of expecting Ruf to get picked up by the Phils and hit 25 HR this year.
This is the franchise who put Shawon Dunston at DH in the 2003 WS.
Given this thread, an opening like this fits, and I didn't even realize this was spam until I glanced at the link at the end.
