Mets’ hunt for top baseball exec far trickier than superstar search

The Mets are playing their search for their new PoBO (let’s make this acronym popular) close to the vest, with Michael Hill, who held that same title for the Marlins until last month, the only known candidate to have interviewed for the post. Early indications, however, are that Cohen and Sandy Alderson, who aspired to make the hire by Thanksgiving, might not land the sort of full-blown, front-office stud whose move to Flushing would shake the industry. They might have to build baseball operations excellence through depth rather than star power.

Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti is said to be very happy in Cleveland, and the same goes for Rays general manager Erik Neander in Tampa Bay. MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reported that the Brewers unsurprisingly didn’t grant the Mets permission to interview their head baseball person David Stearns, understandable given Stearns’ success in Milwaukee.

Plenty of appealing talent remains. Morosi reported the Mets have asked the Indians to speak with Antonetti’s GM Mike Chernoff, who grew up in New Jersey as the son of WFAN’s boss Mark Chernoff. However, Chernoff, who turned down the chance to interview with the Mets two years ago when they wound

PoBO (let’s make this acronym popular)

Let's not, and say we did, OK?

They could conduct a self-aware, ironic executive search for a PoMo PoBO.

Let’s not, and be completely upfront about the fact that we didn’t.

But what if PoBO takes off. Don't you guys have a FOMO?

YOLO

Maybe they’ll find their PoBO in SoHO.

Their PoBO could be a HoBO right now for all we know.

new Mets PoBO would be tempted to live in DUMBO

I mean, I guess he says he's taking a year off. But there is *one* very high-profile exec who recently left his last gig. He has a record of busting WS losing streaks, too.

I’ll be shocked if Theo isn’t in NY by the non-tender deadline. Cohen can probably even sell him a small share of ownership if Theo needs something like that

As long as they don't hire a CHOMO.

You mean ThEO?

I said it before, and I'll say it again. Theo is not gonna work for Alderson. Title inflation is a thing, but Theo going to the Mets under Alderson is a step down for him.

I think the ownership equity is probably gonna be important, and I also wouldn't be surprised if Theo actually would prefer to do less with the day to day stuff. Cubs have a separate head of the business side, perhaps overseeing both is what the next step for him should be.

They could make him the Titular Head of Executive Operations.

Epstein should go to Baltimore and become BOPoBO Theo. He could share the job with Boog Powell, who would be co-BOPoBO BoPo.

I think Epstein has every incentive to join the Mets. Quite a bit of "World's Greatest Leader" luster has worn off. If he can reverse LOLMets, he's a conquering hero again. And he'd inherit a well-stocked cupboard with Alonso, Conforto, Andres Gimenez, and the best pitcher in baseball.

Theo is not gonna work for Alderson.

that would not be, at all, part of any Mets negotiation.

Alderson is 73 (on Sunday) and a cancer survivor.

Cohen likes him, but Alderson is not in any universe going to be a grand poobah over Epstein.

half of the equation, yes, is that Epstein wouldn't take that gig.

the other half is that Cohen would never reach out with such an absurd pitch.

fwiw, I think Epstein does take the year off.

I have a bad feeling the Mets are going to end up with JP Riccardi.

Come on, he knows he can't reverse LOLMets.
