Mets implode in Opening Day 2.0 disaster

The Mets went from May to Mayday to mayhem in a torturous five-run inning that buried them in a 5-3 loss to the Phillies, spoiling a Jacob deGrom gem, in their season opener at Citizens Bank Park.

Entrusted a two-run lead in his Mets debut, Trevor May loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. Another new arrival, lefty Aaron Loup, entered and plunked Bryce Harper to force in a run. J.T. Realmuto’s ensuing RBI single tied it, and Luis Guillorme’s throw home that ticked off James McCann’s glove on Alex Bohm’s grounder (the error was charged to Guillorme) allowed two additional runs. The Phillies scored a final run on Didi Gregorius’ sacrifice fly.

The Mets got three straight two-out hits in the ninth against Jose Alvarado, but Pete Alonso was retired with the tying runs on base to conclude the game.

DeGrom was removed after only 77 pitches. The right-hander fired six shutout innings and allowed only three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. He also went 2-for-3 with an RBI on a night the Mets totaled 10 hits, none for extra bases.

too soon to fire up the Self-Immolation Thread, says one poster who has been known to revive it...

By the end of this year, Aaron Loup will have $10 M in career earnings. I picked the wrong profession.

Hmm, hear me out here. This might be crazy, but maybe the best pitcher on the planet is better the third time through the order than three guys most baseball fans have never heard of.

Well snapper you might be right but the Mets also have to protect his arm. Of course with the way pitch counts are now closely monitored MLB has completely eliminated major arm injuries to pitchers. Remember that guy in the 70s who had to have experimental surgery? Man imagine if that still happened. What was his name? John Thomas?

77 pitches. He's 32 y.o. The idea that mature pitchers can't throw over 100 pitches without serious risk of injury is just completely spurious. Plenty of younger, worse pitchers had pitch counts in the 90s this week.

77 pitches and cruising. Retired the last 9 batters he faced, including striking out the last two in Hoskins and Harper.

The Mets are so worried about protecting his arm that they are never going to make the postseason again with him on the team so he won't have to throw too many innings in season.

@JPosnanski

Updating our Jacob deGrom absurd stats: He has now had 33 no-decisions since the beginning of 2018. His ERA in those games is 1.76, and the Mets have blown 11 leads he left behind. In all, Mets are 36-41 with the best pitcher in baseball on the mound. Never been anything like it.

Am I nuts or should Edwin Diaz obviously have come in to face Harper? The 3-batter rule renders Loup almost useless in that situation.

DeGrom should demand a trade, although I see that Mets spokesman Joe Btfsplk has denied that any such request has been made.
