Mets’ Jacob deGrom leaves start with elbow issue, says ‘level of concern not too high’

t was a dream scenario for the New York Mets’ biggest crowd at Citi Field since 2019. There was the energy of a packed house, and ace Jacob deGrom earning the MVP chants that rained down upon him. A lead in the middle innings against the dangerous San Diego Padres.

Then deGrom left the game after six shutout innings, just 80 pitches and a consultation with Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner. The team announced that he departed with right flexor tendinitis. The Padres scored two quick runs, and the dream scenario nearly turned into a nightmare.

Well, for everyone but deGrom.

“My level of concern is not too high,” deGrom said of his elbow injury following the Mets’ 3-2 win. “I’m pretty sure it’s going to be something that we can treat and hopefully not miss any time.”

DeGrom doesn’t plan to seek an MRI or other imaging, and he expects to proceed with his normal routine in preparation for his next start, with a little extra treatment mixed in.

Jabronis on Twitter were reacting like he was headed for TJ surgery.

Got to save the MRI budget for the more important players? You’d think the fans’ peace of mind would be sufficient reason.

he laid out in some detail last night how familiar he is with this exact situation; I found his analysis intriguing.

The dreaded flexor tendon tightness. I expect the following progression. Another start or two with continued “discomfort”. Then we get the 6 weeks off to rest followed by a ramp up and a couple good minor league appearances. Then almost immediately the issue will reappear. Now, he’s out for season and they go either for the tendon surgery (because the joint is “fine”) or the “platelet-rich injection”. If you really want to waste time, you do both which will take him into late 2022. Then finally TJS which gets him back mid year 2023 (see: mikolas, miles )

Btw, the initial report of a finger issue is consistent with flexor issues. Flexor strains cause the finger not to work

Jacob deGrom (right flexor tendonitis) is out throwing right now in the Citi Field bullpen. Pitching coach Jeremy Hefner states the obvious: "That's a good sign."

It's the second week in June, and this is a starting pitcher with a 688 ERA+.

“My level of concern is not too high,”

Says the guy with $80 M in the bank and guaranteed another $68 M. :-)

Heck, I'm not even a Mets fan and my level of concern is fairly high.

That seemed insane, so I looked it up, and...ha! B-R sez deGrom's ERA+ is actually 689! Checkmate, atheists...!

Let's say deGrom gets 20 more starts and has 128 more IP (he's currently at 10 and 64). To surpass Gibson's 1968 ERA of 1.12, he'd have to allow no more than 19 ER in those games...which certainly seems possible, since he's allowed only four (count 'em) total in his first ten starts. That gives him 23 ER in 192 IP for a 1.08 ERA...and, as Bill James would say, all the redheads he can carry.

same here. This principle also applies to Mike Trout.

ERA+ can change even when the pitcher doesn't pitch, if the league average changes underneath him, right?
