Mets land A’s ace Bassitt for prospect Ginn, more

And so the front office made a necessary deal on Saturday evening, acquiring right-hander Chris Bassitt from the A’s for pitching prospects J.T. Ginn and Adam Oller. The trade brings the Mets a pitcher who produced a 3.15 ERA over 27 starts last season in Oakland, though it comes at a cost: Ginn was one of the Mets’ two highest-ranked pitching prospects.

Bassitt, 33, is a former 16th-round pick who did not enjoy sustained success in the Majors until after recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2018. Since that time, Bassitt has gone 29-14 with a 3.23 ERA in 70 starts and seven relief appearances, with 396 strikeouts over 412 innings. His walk rate has declined every year since ’18, bottoming out at 2.23 per nine innings last season—10th-lowest in the American League among pitchers with at least 150 innings.

The A's tank/rebuild/lottery quest is on. Sigh.

’Ace’ status conferred a bit cavalierly there.

He was a stud last couple of seasons and a clubhouse leader. He had a great twitter(?) post when Bob Melvin left. I am sad to see him go, but the A's are definitely trading high.

The tracks record is short, but the results since 2018 have been fabulous. 412 IP, 129 ERA+.

Also his injury last year was a freak and shouldn’t impact his future.

He’s not going to be the Mets ace obviously but he’s a helluva number three. He’s aging and figured things out late and doesn’t have overpowering stuff and I wouldn’t want to give him many years but for next year he’s good.

Don’t know how to judge the Mets prospects obviously.

Me neither but if you're only giving up your #2 pitching prospect, you're usually not giving up a lot. You never know of course -- Bassitt was probably somebody's #2 pitching prospect at some point.

I don't know where they ranked him in the Mets' system but mlb.com puts Ginn #4 for the A's but not in the top 100 overall. He had TJS in college but has bounced back nicely obviously and the Mets thought enough to go well over slot to get him. Oller checks in at #19 for the A's.

What the hell ... the A's current #2 prospect is named Max Muncy. It's Jeff D'Amico all over again.

EDIT: I should add that Ginn seems like perfectly standard or better return for 1 year of Bassitt.

"Oller" is exactly 1 more letter than "more". Way to earn your pay, headline writer.
