Mets Owner Steve Cohen in Talks on Sands Casino Near Citi Field

Steve Cohen, the billionaire owner of the New York Mets, is in discussions with Las Vegas Sands Corp. about a possible casino next to Citi Field, according to multiple people familiar with the discussions.

The talks are preliminary, according to the people, who were granted anonymity because the matter is private. The state is currently in the early stages of exploring casino licenses in the New York City area, and any formal plan would still require a series of regulatory and legislative approvals.

Cohen didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment through a Mets spokesman. A representative for Las Vegas Sands didn’t respond to an email and voice message.

Earlier this month the New York State gaming commission issued a 14-page request for information to gauge interest in three unawarded casino licenses in the lucrative “downstate” region in and around New York City. Considered a precursor to opening a formal bidding process, responses are due Dec. 10.

Worth it for the restaurants and bars alone.

I don't gamble, but it would be nice if there was someplace closer to the stadium where one could get a meal or a drink after the game.

spoiler alert: there are only three licenses for the region, and the assumption has been that Aqueduct Racetrack's slots parlor - only 8 miles south of Citi Field - and a similar racino at Yonkers Raceway in Westchester County get two licenses to upgrade into blackjack, poker, craps, roulette, etc.

Aqueduct is owned by a very well-off Malaysian company called Genting. can't imagine both they and Cohen/Sands get licenses. so prepare for a possible "Alien vs Predator" sequel.

and NY AG Letitia James today, fresh off her immolation of Andrew Cuomo, announced she will attack new Gov. Kathy Hochul from the left next year in further bloodsport to be the D nominee. election to come in a year, just weeks before the casino licenses are awarded.

of course, the NY Gaming Commission will ignore any political winds and make a fair, independent decision....

Wouldn’t Cohen be muscling in on Gambino Family territory? Be a shame if anything happened to the Mets players as a result of his actions.

Just takes them back to their roots. McGraw as manager of the Giants was good friends with Arnold Rothstein, the man who bankrolled the Black Sox scandal. I have always suspected the 1917 Series was fixed, as well, for Chicago to win. It's all in the finest New York tradition.

Citi Field is already a casino. You show up happy, spend $200, and go home sad.
