Mets P Noah Syndergaard wants to ‘bet’ on himself in free agency

He’d better get healthier.

In speaking to the press on Wednesday, including The Athletic’s Tim Britton, Syndergaard said that he’s willing to play out the final three years of team control without an extension and hit free agency in 2021.

“I trust my ability and the talent that I have. So I feel like I’m going to bet (on) myself in free agency and not do what they did,” Syndergaard said. “But if it’s fair for both sides and they approach me on it, then maybe we can talk.”

Syndergaard won't be a free agent until after the 2021 season. He'll be going into his age 29 season. He's never thrown more than ~180 innings in a season thus far. At the same time, he's been an ace when he's on the mound, with 7.7 WAA in ~520 career innings. If he gets a set of three full seasons and throws ~600 innings while maintaining his current quality, yeah, he's gonna make a lot of money. But he might want to consider buying out a FA year with something like a 10/18/25/25 extension (replacing this year's 6m salary) since he's only going to have made 10m in his career at the end of this year. Which is a good amount of money, but not \"#### you, I'm rich" money. It's not even "Elizabeth Warren's going to tax my wealth!?" money.

If I were Syndergaard, I would be looking to sign the biggest extension I can, frankly. He's a great pitcher, but even healthy pitchers get hurt, and he's never been a notably healthy guy. If his "bet" pays off, he'll probably be getting paid to the tune of a couple hundred million bucks. But the odds of that seem exceptionally low, to me. After this season, he will have made only (I know, "only") about 10 million bucks in his career. A big extension could actually materially change his financial prospects, given that -- a $10M fortune is pretty easy to blow; a $90M one is not.

Is that realistic from the Mets' point of view? I don't remember all the details, but that seems way higher, proportionately, than extensions for guys like Carrasco and Nola.

Yeah, 10/18/25/25 might make sense as an extension starting in 2020 but not this year. They already have him at 6 which means he's currently on something like a 6/10/14 to 6/12/18 track if he's reasonably healthy and Thor-like. Nola was $45 for these years, Severino $40 both with options around $15.

Is anyone else already getting sick of ‘bet on myself’ as the new buzzword?
