Mets pitcher Jerry Blevins retires after 13 seasons in bigs

It was only a few years ago that Jerry Blevins was a staple of the Mets bullpen. Though, when he pitched a scoreless inning against the Miami Marlins on Sept. 29, 2018 at Citi Field, he didn’t think that would be the last time he would appear in a game for the Mets. On Tuesday, 30 months after the final time he retired the side for the Amazin’s, the left-handed specialist told the Daily News he was retiring from baseball.

“It’s just time,” Blevins told the Daily News on what led to his decision. “Many factors involved. But it’s just the right time.”

Blevins returned to Queens and signed a minor-league deal with the Mets this past December. After seven spring training games, he hoped to contribute to the club in some fashion but never cracked the big-league roster this season.

The 37-year-old indicated at spring camp that he would consider retirement if he didn’t make the Opening Day roster. After sticking around for almost the first month of the 2021 season, Blevins hung up his cleats for good Tuesday before the Mets’ series opener against the Red Sox.

Good for Jerry. He posted a statement on Twitter about how it will be nice to sleep in his own bed, not have to ice his arm all the time, not have to miss weddings/funerals/etc because of the Game. He’s made $21 million in his career. Hope he enjoys retirement.
