Mets planning to shut down Jose Quintana for three months

The Mets will prepare to play the first half of the season without Jose Quintana.

The left-hander is expected to be shut down from throwing for at least three months, according to sources, after he was diagnosed last week with a stress fracture on the fifth rib on his left side.

Under that timetable, Quintana would begin throwing again in mid-June at the earliest to ramp up for a return to the Mets’ rotation around the All-Star break.

Quintana, 34, arrived in the offseason on a two-year contract worth $26 million.

I'll highjack this thread to ask why there's no Omnichatter for the WBC. (Is it because they're determined to put the USA games on too late for anybody east of Phoenix to watch them?)

Cardinals got 1.5 WAR out of Quintana for a under $1M in 2022. The Mets are going to spend $13M this year for what will probably be less production than that.

RMc: The "spring training" omnichatter just designates the time period. The WBC is being discussed there.

Did he just injure it throwing?

The cardinals had to give up Oviedo for that 15 starts. They'll come to regret it imo. But Quintana was great for us and if Marmol had simply let him keep pitching instead of blindly following front office math, we might have gotten by the Phillies in Round 1 game 2. Took him out at 70+ pitches, over taxed his bullpen and then inconceivably let Helsley keep pitching when he was toast.

Mets GM Eppler says the report is "premature."

I mean, I guess it's true that he hasn't missed any time yet - but by mid-June it will be true?

Nah, Eppler just means it's the Mets so there's no plan.

@AnthonyDiComo
Update: José Quintana has a lesion on his rib, according to Mets GM Billy Eppler. He was seen by a tumor specialist, and the results of a biopsy came back benign.
However, Quintana is going to undergo bone graft surgery. The Mets aren't expecting him back until at least July.

Hoping for the best.

My prediction that this was one of the best free agent signings in the off season, goes to the crapper now.

This is a very Cardinals thing to have happen. Also a very Mets thing, now that I think about it.

Winker is roughly comparable to other players such as Grossman, Schwarber, Castellanos, Teoscar, Mancini, Wil Myers, Voit, and Pederson. It's not so much talent that he can get away with being a lazy jerk nerdle, but it's enough talent that he makes $100 million when the timing is right and people like this can almost always get $8-10 million.

The bots are getting more entertaining, at least. I’m thinking of changing my handle to “Lazy Jerk Nerdle”
