Mets trade James McCann to Orioles, sign infielder Danny Mendick, source says

The New York Mets traded catcher James McCann to the Baltimore Orioles, it was announced, and signed infielder Danny Mendick to a one-year, $1 million major league contract on Wednesday, sources told ESPN.

The Mets will send $19 million of the remaining $24.3 million on McCann’s contract to the Orioles and receive a player to be named later. The deal saves the Mets more than $5 million in cash and $650,000 for each of the next two years toward the team’s competitive balance tax payroll.

New York entered the day with three catchers—McCann, Tomas Nido and top prospect Francisco Alvarez—on the 40-man roster, and they also signed free-agent catcher Omar Narvaez, whose deal is expected to be announced officially on Thursday.

Can't say that I thought the Orioles needed a catcher, though getting McCann for what essentially is 2/$5.3 MM is not bad at all.

(Even superstar young phenoms need backup catchers).

Please keep Guillorme.

Great Trade!!!! Who'd we get?

I'm kind of amused by the characterization of paying the Orioles $19M to take him as savings.

He can go grab his crotch 16 times a game in Baltimore.

With a 90% luxury tax for overages his contract was costing the Mets $45.6M over the next 2 years.

Can someone explain to me whether McCann's luxury tax number is entirely owned by the Orioles or whether the Mets are on the hook for the $19M in cash they sent the Orioles. If it's the former the Mets save $26.6M (more than McCann will earn).

#2: +1 Love Guillorme. Am thinking his utility is gonna keep him a Met, along with his good vibe (and beard).

The money sent is included in the Mets payroll number. So they save the $5.3 million plus the $4.77 million in overage they would've paid on that $5.3 million

Guillorme is arb 1 so it won't shock me if they trade him (can you trade him after tendering him?) but more likely guys to trade are:

Escobar: Not needed and owed $10 M (so nearly $20 M in total costs)
Carrasco: I assume they want to keep him but owed $14 M

If the season turns to custard (unlikely) then Carrasco and Robertson will be gone (if healthy and effective), maybe Canha and Quintana too and they'd probably like to get out from Scherzer's player option.

They might not need to eat any money on Escobar (or maybe $2 M or so) as long as they'll take nothing in return.

And don't forget the smooth bat catch!

I mean, I think the Mets should keep Guillorme. But, I suspect he'll be traded for bullpen depth. Why get Mendick on a ML contract if you're not going to use him?
   12. Walt Davis Posted: December 23, 2022 at 02:33 PM (#6110718)
Mendick has never even topped 200 PA in a season. He's on a "major league" 1/$1 M contract after being non-tendered by the White Sox. The Mets aren't penciling him in for a major backup role. Guillorme himself is projected to only $1.5 M. Escobar is the guy they want to move. It will be "interesting" to see who they kick off the 40-man and they seem to need to make at least one cut to their ML-contracted position players before the season starts (but surely somebody will get hurt in the spring so no hurry).

Now why does anybody want Guillorme, why would you think you'll get anything useful in return and why didn't that team just sign Mendick for 1/$1 when they had the chance?

If the Mets move Escobar, the Mets bench is Nido, Ruf, Mendick and Guillorme. Despite all the moves, they could still use a good defensive CF, but Marte is the backup there and McNeil's versatility covers every other position. If they want to carry Alvarez they can just cut Ruf.
