Mets, Yankees cleared in Aaron Judge collusion inquiry

Well, if MLB says there is no collusion, there can’t be any collusion. Right? RIGHT?

Aaron Judge, the biggest free agent on the market this winter, isn’t considered a victim of collusion between the Mets and Yankees — from MLB’s perspective — following an inquiry by the Commissioner’s Office into the matter.

MLB has notified the MLBPA that the Mets and Yankees didn’t suppress the market for Judge, sources confirmed Tuesday, following an SNY report this month that indicated the Mets wouldn’t pursue the All-Star outfielder out of deference to their crosstown rival. Time.com first reported MLB’s decision.

If the players’ association believes Judge has been wronged it can still file a grievance that would be heard by an arbitrator. A spokesman for the MLBPA declined comment. An MLB spokesman also declined comment.

MLB reviewed communications between the teams in reaching its conclusion there wasn’t collusion.

I am shocked, SHOCKED, to discover no collusion going on here.
Mr Putin on the line for you sir.

Seems premature, as there's obviously still plenty of time to collude here. On the other hand, this could be a fair signal that the union's watching for anything funny, though on the third hand, that just might mean the Yankees and Mets front offices start colluding using burner phones or bike messengers rather than something easily traced.

I don't have a dog in this hunt, but I'm always amused by how the media treats these "internal" investigations as authoritative.

Indeed. I’m pretty sure they’re not colluding, but I’m also pretty sure the “inquiry” was something like “You guys aren’t colluding, right? No? Ok, thanks.”

Anyone working in a business wouldn't be surprised at how much terrible stuff happens and is documented by emails, texts, and direct corroboration by third parties. One of my friends worked on the committee that vetted these things for the General Counsel and she said it was soul-destroying to see how people blew up their lives with stupid texts/emails not to mention the damage to the aggrieved.

Once a year our GC would do a speech to the leadership team where he would discuss the dangers of emails/texts/voicemails. He would put up examples of things you should never say in writing and then at the end he would stop and pause for a few seconds and say.....

"Everyone of these texts and emails are from somebody in this room."

As 25% of the leadership teams tend to turnover each year there were newbies who were shocked but that means 75% of the people paid no heed to his message the prior year. I was always proud that I never made the cut.

Leadership people are worse than the rank and file because they think they are untouchable. I could easily see GMs and owners screwing up a lot on this issue.

As I understand it, The Rams just had to pay STL 800 million in part because the internal emails about them screwing stl on the move to LA were damning.

It seemed fairly harmless and sort of impossible to prove if it wasn't harmless, so I'm not surprised by the result.

Mets: Mr. Judge we are prepared to offer you 10/410!

Low level employee of Yankees arrives at Citifield at 3AM to collect new Mercedes, informs Mets that Yankees offered 8/335.

Mets next day: Mr. Judge the previous offer has expired but we are now able to offer you 8/341!
