Michael Lorenzen to sign with Los Angeles Angels

Southern California native Michael Lorenzen was a supplemental 1st round pick of the Cincinnati Reds back in 2013, and the Cal-State Fullerton product quickly moved through the minors to make an impact at the big league level.

Sometimes, it was in the rotation. Sometimes, it was as a late-inning reliver. Every now and then, it was with the bat, or even with the glove - while in the outfield. With big biceps and a bevy of all-around talent, it always seemed as if Lorenzen was always a bit of a conundrum for the Reds, as they always had high hopes for him but never really settled on a way to get the most out of his skillset.

Lorenzen hit free agency this winter after spending parts of 7 big league seasons with the Reds, and will now ply his trade for the Los Angeles Angels, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.

I know the numbers aren't kind over the last couple of seasons (6 k/9 last year? Yikes!), but I'm really excited about this for personal reasons. It's a homecoming for him having grown up in Anaheim; I actually played ball against his older brother and his dad coached me briefly. I remember him toddling around the field.

I'm surprised to see that they plan to put him in the rotation. He hasn't done that regularly since his rookie year and wasn't very good at it then. Hopefully he can find his stuff again.

I am not a man of faith but was moved when I first read about Lorenzen's journey and have rooted for him more ever since. JAHV, I don't know how much you knew about the Lorenzen family, but the dad was a real POS who thankfully reconciled with his son before his passing.

I knew a little bit about it, but certainly didn't experience much of the fallout as a kid. I was Jonathan's age - we grew up in the league together and he was always the best (or one of the best) players in our age group (to this day, the best hit I ever got in my baseball career was a triple down the right field line off of Jonathan when we were 14). His dad was always the coach and was always around the field. I remember him being pretty tough as a coach, but his teams always won. I was oblivious to the other stuff going on, although I'm sure it was apparent if I paid attention. His mom still keeps in touch with our Little League - she got us a bunch of tickets when the Reds came to town a few years ago.

I knew a little bit about Michael's story but not in the detail that piece goes into. I am a man of faith and that story encourages me. I lead the youth group at our church (my boys are teenagers) and even though it's a tough job, it's a worthy one for the lives it can change.
