Michigan beats Ohio to win state’s first Little League World Series championship since 1959

Twice, Jackson Surma walked to the plate with runners in scoring position in the biggest game of his young life. Both times he delivered.

Surma drove in four runs and Ethan Van Belle struck out eight as Michigan beat Ohio 5-2 on Sunday in the championship game of the Little League World Series.

“The first one, I knew I had runners on second and third,’’ Surma said. “There weren’t two outs, so I needed just something in play. He threw me a curveball, I sat on it and drove it to left. The second one, he threw me a high fastball and I went up there and got it.’‘

The team from Taylor North Little League delivered the first LLWS title for the state of Michigan since 1959 when Hamtramck National Little League won it all.

“We’re just excited we’re mentioned with them,’’ manager Rick Thorning said. “To be in that group and say that a team from Michigan won the LLWS, it still doesn’t sound right when you say it.’‘

Taylor is directly southeast (kitty-corner) to my hometown of Westland, Michigan. (Beating Ohio in the final is icing on the cake!)

- I only saw 20 min of highlights and
- I have not rooting interest, but

Did it not seem that the MICH pitcher was gifted multiple called strikes, and also gifted an appealed check swing KO that was questionable at best?

I watched a few LLWS games throughout the week and Eric Gregg seemed to be working a lot of games. HUGE zones. I guess you want the kids to swing the bats, but the outside corner seemed to stretch to Pittsburgh.

I guess the umps were on loan from MLB.

The Taylor catchers must have been Molina-like pitch framers…

It was the same for both teams; huge zones. Then in the last inning the ump tightened it up and squeezed the Michigan kid a little. Ridiculous strike zone and an egregious call on that last checked swing. Also, what is the deal with replay? There was a call at first on the back half of a double play where the kid was called out and replaying it in my living room showed him clearly safe.

Yeah, well, that's just 'cuz we know Ohio is evil and deserved to lose! DOWN WITH OHIO!!! (No, I'm not the least bit upset that The School Down South has beaten U-M eight times in a row. Why do you ask?)

Good for Michigan, my home state. It's the greatest place on Earth - from May to October. Fortunately that coincides with baseball season!
