Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera set the record straight regarding his future Friday, telling The Detroit News that he will indeed return for a 21st major league season in 2023.
A day earlier, the 39-year-old Cabrera indicated to reporters that this season may be his last as he continues to deal with knee issues. It marked the first time that Cabrera had opened the door to the possibility that he may not play next year after previously saying he planned to fulfill his contract, which is fully guaranteed through the 2023 season.
But Cabrera said Friday his plan of playing next year hasn’t changed.
“I’m not going to retire,” he told the News. “Not until after next year when my contract is done. They didn’t understand what I said. No way am I going to quit.”

1. TJ Posted: August 06, 2022 at 01:03 PM (#6090289)My beloved Detroit Tigers should just give Miggy the $32 mil now and buy out the last year of his contract. The contract is guaranteed, so Miggy will get his cash whether he is slap-hitting singles for Detroit or he is home eating donuts and Doritos after the team releases him next year. Just buy him out, have him sit the rest of August to heal up some, and run the last month of the season as the Miguel Cabrera Farewell program where Miggy gets at least one at bat per game so the fans can say goodbye.
Him out there full time when he's terrible ?
Since then, .145. You'd figure that to be the final slump of Cabrera's career.
It looked for a while there that Nelson Cruz had bounced back and then some -- from May 6 through June 13, he hit 367/437/567 with 5 HR and 24 RBI in 33 games. Unfortunately since then it's been 173/272/237 with 1 HR in 158 PA and his seasonal production is down to a 93 OPS+.
Votto's doing a bit better -- in his first 3 weeks back from covid, he hit 313/432/703 with 5 HR in 81 PA; since then it's been 235/331/407 which is not terrible in today's game, around a 96 OPS+, with a reasonable 6 HR in 166 PA. He's owed 1/$32.
Canovia sounds like a made-up Latin country from a bad action movie.
Because what do they have to lose? They're a terrible team. Why not play the face of the franchise?
