Mike Clevinger to have Tommy John surgery after re-signing with Padres

San Diego Padres right-hander Mike Clevinger is set to undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday and is expected to miss the entirety of the 2021 season.

The team made the announcement Monday, saying that they’ve also re-signed Clevinger to a two-year deal. The agreement replaces Clevinger’s two remaining seasons of arbitration eligibility.

Clevinger was diagnosed with a right posterior elbow impingement after his final regular season start. He pitched just one full inning in the postseason before he had to be removed from the game.

This will be the second time Clevinger has had Tommy John surgery. He missed most of the 2012 and ‘13 seasons, when he was farmhand in the Angels system, while recovering from the elbow procedure.

TJ #2. Do pitchers generally make it back from two of them ?

My memory (of stuff I've read) is that coming back effectively twice is rare. I don't know why you'd sign him rather than non-tender.

The deal includes a $3 M signing bonus, half payable in Dec 2021 and have in Dec 2022. Anybody know how signing bonuses might work if part of the season is lost? If the signing bonus gets paid in full (my guess), I'm sure lots of players will ask for them and it makes this an extra sweet deal for Clevinger. All told the thing is $11.5 M plus maybe a $500 K bonus for just one season of pitching with no option to keep him if he recovers well. It's not clear he'd have made that in his last arb year even if he'd been healthy this year. I just don't get it from the Padres' perspective.

@1: Immediate guys who come to mind are Daniel Hudson, Kris Medlen, and Jonny Venters. Obviously, it's not a good situation. Clevinger will probably make it back to an MLB mound but he probably won't ever be the same pitcher.

I just don't get it from the Padres' perspective.
Maybe it's for his positive clubhouse presence and team-first mentality <ducks>
