Mike Foltynewicz Designated for Assignment by Braves

Foltynewicz gave up six runs, four hits and four walks in a loss to the Rays on Monday night. He’s been with Atlanta since 2015, posting a 4.24 ERA in 117 starts.

“After the last couple outings in [summer camp], we wanted to give it a go here and it was the same,” Snitker said postgame. “We didn’t see enough increase in the velocity. That’s who he’s been. He’s been a stuff guy for the entire time we’ve had him. The stuff hasn’t been there.”

I won't miss him... never liked him much, anyway. I think there's more to the story beyond his performance too.

In retrospect, this move came two starts too late.

Apparently they told him during the game he’d been DFA’d. He must be on someone’s #### list. Can’t wait to hear the whole story.

Wow, wasn't this guy very good just two years ago?

4 WAR and 200+ strikeouts in 2018, yeah.

Well, the velocity is also WAY down and teams with playoff aspirations (as easy as it may now be to make the playoffs) need to figure out ASAP who will be worth using by then. If there is a by then.

(per fangraphs: 2018 fb = 96.4 mph, 2020 = 90.5)

His stuff could be slow-pitch sotfball good, and the Red Sox will still sign him by dinner time.

Staff ace in Boston.

As a bonus, you can start him in the final game of a playoff series to save everyone the anxiety associated with a tense game.

That made me laugh

What's he doing on Oct 3?

That sort of velocity drop is usually an injury or possibly something worse. Anyway, about $9 M in career earnings plus whatever he gets this year plus whatever he signed for in 2010 (#19 pick).

Kinda surprised he cleared waivers

I don't think it's that surprising. By DFAing him, the Braves (who presumably know him better than any other organization) publicly declared that he isn't worth his salary or a roster spot. The Braves are obviously still open to trading him, so now an opposing GM can try to negotiate a trade without having to pick up his whole contract.
