Milwaukee Brewers Sign First Baseman Luke Voit to a Minor League Deal

Voit, 32, is best known for his monster seasons in 2019 and 2020 with the Yankees, but his health and productivity have fallen off from there. Last season, split between the Padres and the Nationals, Voit hit just .226/.308/.402/102 wRC+, and there was not a robust market for him this offseason.

For the Brewers, Voit makes so much sense as a right-handed power bat, who can make appearances at first base (where lefty Rowdy Tellez is otherwise the starter) and at DH (where lefty Jesse Winker is otherwise going to appear a whole lot). It’s an almost perfect superficial fit, and the Brewers are getting Voit on a minor league deal.

The one big caveat there is that Voit has pretty significant reverse splits for his career, hitting fellow righties muuuuch better than lefties (especially this past season). Not sure how that would factor into his deployment, as the Brewers might simply be interested in a possible source of cheap power. But if you’re hoping this doesn’t work out for them, then the reverse splits are maybe something you can hang your hat on, at least in terms of how Voit coordinates with the guys the Brewers already have.

The reverse split is real enough (70 points of OPS) but very little in terms of power (about 1 HR per 19 PA vs 1 in 21) or K-rate. Interestingly enough, a lot of it is BABIP which seems weird. Anyway, his career vLHP is 768 (500+ PA) while Tellez is 717 (<400) and Winker is 661 (450) so still a likely improvement. The reverse split also means there's no harm giving him PA vs RHP (Tellez/Winker hurt or Winker needed in LF that day) so you can probably get 400-450 PA out of him and easier to justify the roster spot. In fact, in OPS terms, over the same time periods and about the same PA (but not adjusting for park), Voit has outhit Tellez against both LHP and RHP. (Voit is 4 years older so in greater danger of collapse I suppose but there's very little to prefer Tellez over Voit.)

The Brewers own the market on large adult sons.
