Minor League Baseball player Solomon Bates says he is gay, has been out to teammates since 2019

Solomon Bates, a Minor League Baseball player who was until this week in the San Francisco Giants system, came out publicly on Instagram while also announcing that he is no longer with his team, the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

Shortly after sharing his true self on Instagram, he told Outsports that he had come out to his teammates in 2019, but he’s now coming out publicly to be an example of a successful gay athlete, as well as an inspiration for others like him.

“I haven’t been out as my complete self because I’ve been hiding myself,” he said. “I’m a masculine man who loves the sport of baseball, and now I want to open up doors for gay athletes like me.”

Bates has dropped hints on social media over the last year, including on Twitter.

Did the Richmond Flying Squirrels cut him because having a known gay ballplayer would have damaged their good name?

I doubt it -

He appears to be a 25 yo reliever that's topped out at AA who gives up a lot of homers and walks too many to get over a perfectly fine but not exceptional K rate.

If he wants to keep pitching and cannot catch on anywhere as org fodder, we can reassess - but he looks pretty much your standard 6 year FA live arm to fill out a minor league roster to me.

Looking at his stat line, you wonder if missing 2020 cost him. Obviously we'll never know and it's not like they were historical numbers but in 2019 acroaa A/A+, he had 60 K and just 10 BB (3 intentional) across 43 innings. That still somehow worked out to an ERA near 4 -- more hits and HR than you'd expect for that kind of performance but still a 60/10 K/BB is hard to ignore. As #2 notes though, in 2021 still at A+, the walk rate ballooned then in 2022 at AA the HR rate has been horrific (just 28 hits in 43 innings but 10 of those are HRs). DIPS tells us ya gotta be good at at least two of the TTOs to make it as a pitcher so maybe it's too early to rule that out for Bates. 2019 looks more and more like a fluke but in 2019 he was good at two of them then in 2021 he was pretty good at two of them (just 4 HR in 53 IP, K>IP) so maybe the potential is/was there. If nothing else, maybe without covid, he'd be getting released from a AAA team.

Yeah, when he said he really wanted to be like Mike Piazza even though he’s a pitcher, we really should have known!
