Minors: MLB’s proposal a ‘shell game’ to yank 42 teams out of their communities - The San Diego Union-Tribune

With the advances in technology MLB teams don’t need as many minor leaguers. At the same time minor leaguers are getting paid crap. By consolidating their minor league systems teams can increase minor league pay by cutting expenses for teams and players they no longer need.

Minor league teams on the contraction list, on the other hand, aren’t happy with the prospect of losing MLB affiliations.  It will increase their costs.

Minor League Baseball also disputes Manfred’s claim that MLB subsidizes the minors “to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars” a year. MLB’s argument, Minor League Baseball’s memo says, overlooks the fact that $20 million a year is paid to the commissioner’s office each year in the form of a ticket tax, as required by the expiring PBA.

That amount, Minor League Baseball says, is equal to nearly 50 percent of player salaries below the Double-A level.

Minor League Baseball says its current annual expenses top $60 million in “cash, goods and services tied directly to players, coaches and staff.” This includes a portion of the bats and balls used, the costs for transportation and ballpark amenities, from batting cages to playing surface maintenance.

This is going to be one of those moves that will ensure that, in 40 years, no one outside big league cities care about baseball at all.

Exactly. For the relatively small % of revenue they're saving, they're shooting themselves in the foot long-term.

The same way paying players a much lower percentage of revenues resulted in them lowering ticket prices.

I'm not sure any of them (MLB owners) care what's going on in 40 years. They're all dead at that time, the teams will be sold off. I kind of think they saw the decreasing TV ratings for the WS and thought it would be good to tighten the belt a little bit (although the 3 big off season signings appear to contradict that). Dropping the number of MiLB teams will enable them to enhance the balance sheet and get out while the getting's good.

What ìs there to stop a renegade team or two from creating a league of 6 or 8 teams and stocking them with their own players in addition to the 4 they will have under the new system. They could grab have all the top players who are left out with the new system.

So 40 million pays all salaries below AA level. That’s more than 100 players per team, 3-4 thousand players in all. For about the free agent price of one superstar.

Beyond whatever explicit rules they come up with, those sort of signings wouldn't be protected by the options system that's in place. You sign an 18-year old kid, he does well, he's a free agent at 19.

Off topic: It seems the league has approved the 26 man roster rule and half of them to be pitchers and the other half positional. Is that correct? Thats what Im seening on the reddit forum.

DONt know where else to put this. But it is news
