MLB calls umpire union statement about Manny Machado discipline “inappropriate” – HardballTalk

“Manny Machado was suspended by MLB Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre, who considered all the facts and circumstances of Machado’s conduct, including precedent, in determining the appropriate level of discipline.  Mr. Machado is appealing his suspension and we do not believe it is appropriate for the union representing Major League Umpires to comment on the discipline of players represented by the Players Association, just as it would not be appropriate for the Players Association to comment on disciplinary decisions made with respect to umpires.  We also believe it is inappropriate to compare this incident to the extraordinarily serious issue of workplace violence.”

I dunno. Superficially this sounds like a fine principle. But in practice, if an umpire crossed a line with a player and subsequently received only a slap on the wrist, I don't see why it would be inappropriate for the MLBPA to call the league out on it. Obviously unions have a strong interest in having their members' backs, that's sort of the whole point.

The umpire union is well within their rights to publicly respond to a weak response about their safety.

The umps had me up until they invoked WillNobodyThinkOfTheChildren™. (What Machado did wasn't comparable to an active shooting, obviously, but neither do I think it's an overbid to say it raised legitimate safety concerns. I think it IS an overbid to suggest that pointing that out trivializes office shootings.)

Yeah the statement was a little over the top but Machado’s firing the bat like that is genuinely dangerous. Beyond that “workplace safety” is an issue that encompasses a lot of things and while it’s certainly going to invoke people shooting up a workplace it’s also going to include something less violent than that.

The MLB Umpire Union probably needs to have a chat with their PR people because this is a very poorly worded statement but at the same time I think the umps have a legitimate gripe here. Players shouldn’t be throwing bats in anger. There are a lot of ways for that to end badly.

I wonder if the MLBUA even has PR people?

Is this a root for the meteor situation?

I would think the throwing of the bat should get an automatic 3 game suspension. Having said that, the union should confine it’s comments to their collective bargaining discussions.

I, for one, am shocked that a tireless ambassador for fair play and good sportsmanship like Manny Machado would be involved in such an incident.

There should be some disciplinary action taken against whoever runs the Umpires' Union Twitter account and keeps posting pictures of text.

Meanwhile - Tony Clark, whose job it actually is to worry about Manny Machado's suspension, issued a stern "Huh?"

I normally am not a big slippery slope believer, but if you let physical contacts with umps go and do not nip it at the start, you are going to have someone throw a Kermit Washington level punch on an umpire at some point.

As long as the target is Hernandez, Bucknor, or Cowboy Joe, I'd be OK if MLB started taking stricter measures after it happens.
