MLB could still have expanded postseason in 2020: ‘I’ll be available to discuss it,’ Tony Clark says

Major League Baseball could still expand its postseason format for the 2020 season, MLB Players Association Tony Clark told Ronald Blum of the Associated Press.

Though the lack of an agreement between the league and the players about the rules governing the shortened season means the league is likely to move forward with a normal, 10-team playoff format, MLB could still try to make another proposal for an expanded postseason. Clark told Blum he’s open to the possibility.

“I would simply say that if there’s interest to discuss something, I’ll be available to discuss it,” Clark said.

We will address the issue in August if either the Yankees and Dodgers have poor starts.

Plenty of time during the league-wide quarantine. But this is total jackassery.

If Clark is willing to discuss everything Manfred considers, he has no idea what he's in for. Better stock up on lozenges.

I'm going to assume that this means that Clark will be willing to discuss it if there's $omething in it for the players.

(Unless the pandemic rules it out, that's exactly what Clark should be saying).

With a little luck and a lot of hard work, the players might get the same deal that was on the table two weeks ago.

#5 Of course.

And #4, I laughed. Thank you.

“With a little luck and a lot of hard work, the players might get the same deal that was on the table two weeks ago.“

Funny, we are reading the field of play completely differently. The owners are imposing a longer regular season than they would like despite claiming to lose money on every game played. Because they imposed this regular season without agreement they are stuck with a conventional postseason. The owners need an expanded postseason a whole bunch more than the players do because that’s where the owners expect to make their money. Additionally, the owners are assuming the risk that another outbreak of the coronavirus will pop up at any time and cancel whatever games remain, including all postseason games. Also, the players are going to file and (likely) win a grievance over the owners bargaining in bad faith.

Now tell me again why the players are in such a bad bargaining position now that they would be lucky to get what they rejected two weeks ago.

Literally everything you listed is something bad for the owners. When do we get to the parts that are good for the players?

The players signed up for the same number of games at the same per-game rate, minus the expanded postseason and the associated sweeteners, that was available two weeks ago, before they walked out of a nearly signed agreement.

In return for which they have the option of filing a worthless grievance in which they would have the burden of proof to show that the owners were negotiating in bad faith -- despite the fact that both sides were engaged in daily negotiations for a month, with several offers and counteroffers.

Giving up real money and concessions available now for a dubious chance of winning a lawsuit at some point in the future is just stupid.

If you're saying that the owners also screwed themselves by not getting a deal done, I could not agree more.

This is something I don't understand. I was under the impression that what ownership would really want to avoid is the discovery process connected with the lawsuit, because it would open the books to the players' association. Losing the suit would be the least of their worries.

Unless somehow they've been telling the truth this whole time, their absolute priority should have been to avoid that grievance at just about any cost.
