MLB is forbidding boozy playoff celebrations

Still, MLB recognizes it can remove one vital element from any stadium celebration — alcohol. The teams supply it in celebratory moments and MLB is going to forbid its presence. MLB also can, to a large extent through the teams, control the clubhouse. To that end, the league is going to ask players to celebrate on the field and to mask up as soon as it’s possible to do so. Commemorative shirts and caps are likely to be distributed in a way to limit contact with as many people as possible.

The restrictions come at a time when there is the potential for more celebrations than ever, since the playoff field is swelling from 10 to 16 this year. But that also leaves the awkward question of when to celebrate. The Dodgers, for example, have won seven straight NL West titles and likely will clinch a playoff spot first among all teams some time this week. Do they celebrate that? Wait for a division clinch, when that is not assured?

Naturally. Gotta prime the pump so everyone can CALL IN RIGHT NOW so they can BE THE FIRST to order their MIAMI MARLINS 2020 WILD CARD commemorative cap, t-shirt, hoodie, and program for the low low price of $139.99.

Yeah. I'm sure the players will respect this about as much as the mandatory masks in the dugout rule. And I'm sure MLB will enforce it about as much.

The playoffs are a travesty anyways, but allowing 16 teams in is just beyond insanity.

The players had better fight this becoming a permanent thing. If winning the pennant becomes even more of a crap shoot than it already is, teams are going to have even less incentive to compete hard, and playing signings are going to drop off accordingly. If you can get to the dance with a 75-87 record, why bother spending the money to get up to 90 wins?

They don't have to remove their chaws now! Bonus!

I can’t stand that they now sell merchandise that says “POST-SEASON”. That was never a thing. Get off my lawn.

And having the first round be a 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, etc. best of three match-up is beyond beyond insanity.

I applaud this move. We should do everything we can to discourage alcohol consumption.

Since the Astros moved to make 2 15 team leagues, has there been a full season where 75-87 would get you in? Looks like the last teams into the playoffs this year will be right around .500, give or take a game.

Last team into playoffs, 2020 rules.

2019: Rangers 78-84, Cubs 84-78. Mets miss at .500
2018: Twins 78-84 (2nd place, get in instead of 80-82 Angels), Arizona 82-80
2017: Royals/Rays 80-82, Marlins 77-85 (2nd place)
2016: Astros or Yankees (84-78), Pirates 78-83
2015: Indians 81-80, Arizona 79-83
2014: Indians 85-77 (Yankees 84-78 get 2nd place), Mets/Braves 79-83 (one gets 2nd, other last WC)
2013: Orioles or Yankees 85-77, Padres or Giants 76-86

So 2013 Padres or Giants would be the worst to make it with 76, and looks like every year one of the 2 leagues lets somebody in with a losing record.

Whether you're serious or not ("everything we can" is pretty open-ended) - Does this do that?

Bud—Yeah. Kids won’t watch their role models drinking alcohol after a game—they won’t see the message “it’s ok to drink when you’re celebrating” reinforced by their favorite players on national television.

I don't think I've ever seen a player drinking during a celebration. They're seen spraying bottles and pouring it on each other's heads.

I'm all for not glamorizing drinking during the Bud Light Postgame show which will start after this message from Johnnie Walker Black.

My senior year in college the big event for me was a presentation in one of my classes. It was just after spring break and while I had another 5 weeks or so of classes after that presentation I knew that if I got through the presentation I was home and dry, graduation was just a matter of running out the clock. I bought a bottle of champagne and when I finished the presentation (which I KILLED) I went back to my room, grabbed the champagne, hopped in the shower and did the whole screaming and yelling thing while dumping it over my head.

Pro-tip; if you are naked and pouring champagne over your head it's best if you haven't chilled the champagne.

Good for MLB. My uni banned parties, too.

Seriously, if 16 team playoffs become a thing, the rule should be that if there are >.500 teams in one league who don't make it, they get the sub .500 team spots in the other league. If we're going to turn it into a crazy board game, let's really go crazy.

Also, I'd put the defending champ in no matter what.

What're they gonna do? Come to my house?

There's a reason Marie-Philip Poulin is my sports idol.
