MLB issues 8 suspensions after Cincinnati Reds-Pittsburgh Pirates brawl; David Bell out 6 games

ATLANTA – Two days after a benches-clearing brawl between the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates, Major League Baseball announced suspensions for six players and both managers on Thursday afternoon that totaled 40 games.

Reds pitcher Amir Garrett received an eight-game suspension, manager David Bell was given a six-game suspension, pitcher Jared Hughes was suspended for three games and former Reds outfielder Yasiel Puig received a three-game suspension.

For the Pirates, reliever Keone Kela was given a 10-game suspension, infielder José Osuna received a five-game suspension, Kyle Crick got three games and manager Clint Hurdle was suspended for two games.

All six players elected to appeal their suspensions and are eligible to play until their appeals are resolved. Suspended players count against the 25-man roster.

We assume that the Indians were expecting this when they traded for Puig, but, given how their management has behaved this year to date….

Given the recent Dugout press flashbacks, maybe we can have a Indians-Manafort showdown over Puig.:-)

David Bell’s suspension is the one that jumps out at me. I thought it should have been double digits. He had already been ejected from the game, someone coming back from eh clubhouse like that should get a longer suspension than just six games in my opinion.

maybe the league can get the teams to fire both managers - everybody wins!

He also escalated things by shoving Hurdle, when Hurdle hadn't done anything to anyone else at that point.

Agree that Bell got off easy. Good to see Kela get a stiff penalty for throwing at Dietrich for over celebrating in May.

I can't believe Garrett only got 8 games. Charged off the mound and threw the first punch, a huge left hook that landed to someone's face.

What exactly was he so bent out of shape about? Running up the score? Pimping the HR he gave up?

Edit: Correction, that left hook didn't actually connect. Still.

celebrating
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Why didn't they just say they were trying to avoid punching and fighting the other players? We can't look into their hearts so we would have to take their word.
