MLB makes independent Atlantic League its first ‘partner league’

Major League Baseball is making the independent Atlantic League its first “partner league,” a distinction awarded as the expiration nears for MLB’s agreement with the affiliated National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues.

On Wednesday, MLB said it will meet regularly with the Atlantic League to discuss joint marketing and promotional opportunities. The sides extended their agreement through 2023 to stage experiments in the Atlantic League, which tested an automated ball-strike system to call pitches in 2019 and has used other innovations such as limits on defensive shifts and mound visits, larger bases and shorter breaks between half-innings.

“The Atlantic League clubs and players have been great partners to us as we jointly test ways to make our game even more interesting and engaging to fans,” Morgan Sword, MLB’s executive vice president of baseball economics and operations, said in a statement.

I love the Atlantic League and hope they are emboldened to make even more experiments.

Maybe this time, they could try some that don’t make the game worse.

I really liked the stealing first experiment. Basically, the dropped third strike rule extending to all counts. I saw that last year in Lancater and it took me a second to remember the new rule.

Anything to encourage baserunning daring is good, IMO. I also like it as a reward for good catchers and good control pitchers.

Have they tried a heavier baseball yet?

Larger bases? WTF?

Or how about a much higher pitcher's mound--make the rubber, say, 4 feet above field level.

Experiments to make the game move faster. Experiments to encourage more balls-in-play, perhaps more steals, etc. Experiments to encourage pitchers to face batters more than once through the order. None of those experiments would make the game worse.

I'm pretty interested in a heavier baseball. It would reduce the velocity of fastballs, reduce the spin rate of breaking balls, be harder to hit over the fence, be harder to throw across the infield. All things that would incentivize balls in play. It doesn't need to be a bowling ball, just a half an ounce could be enough to make a huge difference.

Yes, the ball is what can answer most of the problems. Add both an ounce or two of weight and a centimeter or two of circumference.

Problem is players on both sides would hate it. Pitchers want K's and velocity, not contact. Hitters want HR.

My main concern with a larger baseball is how it will affect pitcher health.

This would be alleviated somewhat by the advent of underhand pitching with windmill windups.

Sooner or later someone is just going to have to tell the players "too damn bad" and make the changes that need to be made to make the product more appealing, for the longer-term health of MLB as an enterprise. Unfortunately that someone sure as hell isn't going to be Manfred.

Yeah, he'd consider it, but he wouldn't actually do it. And then he'd put casino logos on players' uniforms.
