MLB managers should be challenging a lot more in 2023

In 2022, Showalter challenged 33 times and got 26 overturned calls (tied for the most in MLB). That’s 0.20 challenges per game and 0.16 calls per game overturned in the Mets’ favor. Through 55 games in 2023, he has challenged 11 times — also 0.20 challenges per game.

Far more meaningful, however, is that those 11 challenges have resulted in just two calls overturned — 0.04 per game, or one-fourth last year’s rate — tied with Padres manager Bob Melvin, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli and Angels manager Phil Nevin for the fewest successful challenges this year. After finishing last season with the highest success rate, Showalter has the second-lowest success rate this season, and only Melvin has challenged effectively less often.

The point is not to pick on Showalter and the Mets; rather, the disparity between last season and this — and the stakes of every favorable call for a team with high expectations enduring a slow start — help to illustrate that the league at large doesn’t seem to have adapted. In 2022, MLB managers as a whole issued 0.22 challenges per game at a 49.0% success rate, which means that 0.11 calls per game were overturned based on manager challenges.

Remarkably, through a third of the 2023 season, managers are challenging calls at exactly the same pace, 0.22 per game. But with the time to internally review a play slashed, they’re less successful, getting just 45.8% of calls overturned.

The 15 seconds to challenge rule probably plays a big part. A team might not even get to a conclusive camera angle if it guesses wrong on what to look at first, so they can’t be sure enough to challenge more frequently.

Early in the season, Buck had a couple of challenges where he was clearly correct but the challenge was denied. I mean, I'm a Mets fan, but it was clear, and the announcers were flummoxed. Afterwards, there was chatter that MLB and/or the umps were sending a message to Buck, since there was so much talk about how good they were at challenges last year.

I didn't buy into that chatter, but I'm still quite confident that 2 more (at least) should be in the win column for those 11 challenges.

I would like it, if mlb.tv would have a daily round-up of challenged calls and the results as a video article. It would allow the fans to see a fuller picture of what is going on with challenges etc, instead of just their own team. I get that mlb doesn't really like to advertise the challenges, either successful or not because that is admitting to being human. (as far as I have noticed, I've not seen challenges pop up in the videos within game day even)

If you need a heavy-duty air compressor for commercial use, the Fortress 27 Gallon 200 PSI Oil-Free Professional Air Compressor is the perfect choice. With a 200 PSI maximum pressure, this compressor can handle even the toughest jobs. Best Onboard Air Compressor

In the 2023 season, managers are still issuing challenges at the same pace as the previous year, but Geometry Dash the success rate of those challenges has dropped. This could be attributed to changes in the rules or procedures for reviewing calls, potentially reducing the time for internal review and making it harder for managers to get calls overturned.

It looks like the bots who dredge up old threads have upgraded from outright advertising that includes a link to whatever they're selling, to using a large language model to make some on-topic comment with a link to whatever they're selling randomly stuck in the middle. Progress!
