MLB offseason begins: 147 players become free agents

A total of 147 players have become free agents, led by pitchers Trevor Bauer, Marcus Stroman, Liam Hendriks and Masahiro Tanaka, José Quintana, outfielders George Springer and Marcell Ozuna; infielders DJ LeMahieu and Andrelton Simmons and designated hitter Nelson Cruz. Additional players will be added pending decisions on team, player and mutual options during the next few days.

The price of qualifying offers rose by $1.1 million to a record $18.9 million. Players are eligible for the offer if they were on the roster for the season and never received a qualifying offer before.

So how many of these folks take the QO and run?

Which players would have been free agents this year for the first time but signed extensions? Obviously Betts and deGrom. I think Kyle Hendricks. Any other big ones?

Also, JP Realmuto is oddly absent from the excerpt.

Kirby Yates. I guess he won't cash in. 2019 was a hell of a "WTF" year even for a reliever.

I didn't notice many extenders not already mentioned in there. Jose Ramirez who signed a few years ago. Polanco signed a very early buyout.

EDIT: And on the essential topic, Hendricks signed his in 2019; so did deGrom. Even the newbie Luis Robert signed his this January. Is Mookie the only post-covid extension so far?

No doubt there are economic differences among teams, but there's clearly more than money to being well-run. As we know. Today's example: Two contracts were signed for a guaranteed 2/$24M following 2018, and a rudimentary summary of the results says it all.

Daniel Murphy: -1 bWAR
DJ LeMahieu: 8.7 bWAR1

How many even get a QO?

Two contracts were signed for a guaranteed 2/$24M following 2018, and a rudimentary summary of the results says it all.

The Rockies let their 29 year old second baseman with a career 92 OPS+ walk, signing a 33 year old with a 118 career OPS+.

It did not turn out well.

How many even get a QO?

Very very few.

Andrelton Simmons quit the season and left $500k on the table. He may not be getting that money back as he probably expected.

I would guess Bauer, Springer, Realmuto, Ozuna and maybe Tanaka gets a QO? I can't see anyone else getting one.
