MLB Pipeline: Complete farm system rankings, 1-30

1. Tampa Bay Rays
2020 midseason rank: 1
2020 preseason rank: 1
Top 100 Prospects: Wander Franco (No. 1), Luis Patiño (No. 19), Randy Arozarena (No. 34), Vidal Brujan (No. 50), Brendan McKay (No. 72), Shane McClanahan (No. 84), Xavier Edwards (No. 85), Shane Baz (No. 90)
Top 2021 rookie: Randy Arozarena, OF

Highlighted by baseball’s top prospect, Wander Franco, the Rays have battled with the Padres over the past five rankings for the top farm system title. But last fall, Tampa Bay watched as Randy Arozarena electrified the postseason, and then snagged Luis Patiño from San Diego to bolster its case even more and lead baseball with eight Top 100 prospects.

I suppose it's nice to see the smarter than everybody Rays sitting at #1 ... and heartening to see the terrible Tigers, Mariners, Marlins and Os in spots 2-5 ... and scary to see the Padres, even after a couple of prospect-heavy deals, still sitting at #6. (Per the article, the Padres traded 15 of their top 30 from 2020. And guess what -- #8 overall prospect, just #2 in their system, CJ Abrams is a SS.)

The Cubs of course are down at #22.

If prospects fall into Tampa, and no one cares, do they make a sound?

The Pirates pushed all their chips into the farm system, and still only pushed it up to No. 8. I have a feeling tanking might not be completely efficient if half-a-dozen teams are doing it at the same time.

They won the ************* pennant, what do you want?

Don't answer that. I know what you want. But it's not reasonable. The Rays are a good team with a bright future, and they manage it on a shoe-string payroll. You can't reasonably ask for more than that.

The Rangers were on a 100-loss pace in 2020, traded their #1 starter, have what looks like a 110-loss roster on paper, and rank in the bottom 1/3 of farm systems whose top prospect is rated #63. Apparently they're expecting the buzz from their Billion Dollar Barn to sell tickets to the new place this season.

9. San Francisco
10. Dodgers
11. St. Louis
12. Detroit
13. Seattle
14. Yankees
15. Kansas City
16. Pittsburgh
17. Cincinnati
18. Baltimore
19. Mets
20. Boston
21. Colorado
22. White Sox
23. Angels
24. Texas

the buzz from their Billion Dollar Barn

That's the sound of BDC snoring in air-conditioned comfort.

Hah, they will play this season without me as I socially distance.

The ghastly thing is that the Rangers' prospect outlook has greatly improved over recent years. If Josh Jung, Sam Huff, and Dane Dunning all become good major-league players, that's a near-infinite improvement over their last decade.

Right, and nobody cares. They have no fans. They won't draw 1.25M with or without restrictions. Might as well move them to a better city. Montreal couldn't be any worse.

They have few fans willing to visit the worst park in MLB, by a considerable margin. By other measures (TV, radio), they do all right.

Not all-right enough to run anything above a bargain basement payroll. Their 2021 payroll is in line with the terrible teams doing a complete rebuild.

I think it's fair to say that the experiment with MLB in Florida has been a complete failure. Should have stuck to 28 teams.

Not planning to get the vaccine?
   13. BDC Posted: March 24, 2021 at 03:31 PM (#6009903)
On the contrary – I registered as soon as eligible & will get vaccinated on Saturday. Still little interest in events or travel this year. I'll look forward to '22.

They won the pennant with the bargain basement payroll. They've made the post season five of the past ten years in the same division as the Yankees and the Red Sox. And they picked up another pennant a few years before that. Save your ire for the Marlins, who deserve it. This is a team that honestly tries to win baseball games, and succeeds at it.

It’s this type of attitude that soured many Keep BDC Cool Super PAC contributors on politics.

It's not ire, it's lack of interest. Their style, while very successful, bores me to tears. It's like when the Devils dominated the NHL with the neutral zone trap. Effective, but boring as ####. I have no interest in rooting for platoons, openers, shifts and fungible RPs. Welcome to MLB 2021!

As Torkelson said after his Draft, “It’s a great time to be a Tiger.”

I so badly want to believe this. But it seems far more likely that Spencer Torkelson will crash into Riley Green going back on a fly ball, causing Casey Mize to drop dead of a heart attack and Tarik Skubal to trip over his own feet in the bullpen, while Matt Manning gets abducted by aliens.

If all you are is a starter organization and you don't have a single player really identified with your team and have no hope or desire to even have such a player for the indefinite future, you're not really even a real sports organization. Even the mid-90s Devils, loathsome though they were, didn't just churn through only players in their early-mid 20s. They have legitimate retired numbers of guys from that era who stayed with them from start to retirement/near retirement. The Rays don't have that, don't want that, and will never have that.

Everything about the Rays sucks. Literally everything. A small faction of the baseball in-thrall-to-the-spreadsheet, players-as-random-number-generators faction gets off on them. Anyone with any soul or taste doesn't. They took a pitcher out of a World Series deciding game in which he'd given up one hit through five-plus innings. I give zero ##### about their wins or their farm system.

I was with you until the aliens part; I just do not see that happening.

Because why would an intelligent species of aliens have any interest in studying a member of the Detroit Tigers?

I don't follow the Rays that closely but I couldn't disagree more -- watching the playoffs last year I found the Rays a really fun team to watch and I wish they played in a place that cared about them more.

The disjunction between the MLB rating of the Orioles farm system (#5) and Law's (#18) is striking.

The biggest problem with the Rays is that two years from now, outside of a couple of guys the whole team you saw in the playoffs will have been traded. Typically they do well in their trades, but still. There's just no continuity, there's no core team to root for for more than a year or three.
