MLB playoff starters’ strength reminds us of Madison Bumgarner’s brilliance

SAN FRANCISCO—For a dozen years, Madison Bumgarner has been associated with the Giants, and for most of that time he has served as the face of the franchise and cornerstone on the field. But Bumgarner woke up Thursday morning looking at free agency and an uncertain future.

The 30-year-old will hit an open market that has been unkind to some veterans in recent years, but as free agency approached, Bumgarner was always confident in the case he could present to other organizations.

It was bolstered as the Giants sat at home in October.

This was a throwback postseason, one in which a game that increasingly has focused on hard-throwing bullpens took a step back and embraced starting pitching. Gerrit Cole, Justin Verlander and Zack Greinke got the Astros to a Game 7. Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin pushed the Nationals to their first title.

For all the (deserved) accolades heaped on the starting pitchers in the Series, none of them put together a truly dominant start - the best was probably Cole's Game 5, the only one over a 70 Game Score, and it wouldn't have made the top 5 starts of any of either team's big 3 pitchers during the season.

(Since the article's about Bumgarner - by Game Score, 6 of his 14 career postseason starts thus far have been better than any start in this year's Series.)

These were powerhouse offenses so the relative pitching performances need to be measured against that fact. Holding the score down against either lineup was a Herculean task. I thought the starting pitching was excellent.

I'd say Grienke's in game 7 was pretty dominant, but he did it without the strikeouts. There were only a couple of solidly hit balls off him - Turner's out to leadoff the game was probably harder than Rendon's HR (which might be an out in a number of other stadiums).

Maybe Strasburg G6 (needed more Ks for a big game score).

But didn't get to see the game and checking the box score .... the one out he got in the 9th is listed as a "lineout" P-2B-1B. Huh? Was it off Strasburg and bounced to the 2B who threw to first? Wouldn't that be a "groundout"? Is that classed as a LD in the splits?
