MLB playoffs 2023: Orioles clinch postseason berth

AFTER THE ORIOLES improved from 52-110 in 2021 to 83-79 last season—the ninth-biggest year-to-year improvement in MLB history—Baltimore fans expected, or at least hoped, that Elias would address the rotation. The Orioles had ranked 23rd in the majors in ERA, 26th in strikeout rate and 25th in FanGraphs WAR—not exactly a playoff-caliber rotation. The big moves were anticlimactic: The team signed veteran innings eater Kyle Gibson to a one-year, $10 million contract and acquired Cole Irvin from the A’s. Thus, the less-than-stellar projections.

There are three ways to view the offseason:

(1) Elias saw the 2022 season as a bit of a fluke, viewed regression as likely and didn’t want to commit big money in free agency just yet, not until it was a sure thing the Orioles were serious contenders. Even though he had said in August 2022 that “our plan for the offseason has always been to significantly escalate the payroll,” this more conservative approach made some sense—even if Orioles fans wanted the club to go after Justin Verlander or Carlos Rodon.

(2) Ownership didn’t provide the checkbook. Definitely possible, especially in light of John Angelos’ comments to the New York Times in August: “The hardest thing to do in sports is to be a small-market team in baseball and be competitive, because everything is stacked against you—everything,” he said. Angelos went on to elaborate: “Let’s say we sat down and showed you the financials for the Orioles. You will quickly see that when people talk about giving this player $200 million, that player $150 million, we would be so financially underwater that you’d have to raise the [ticket] prices massively.” That doesn’t sound like an owner desiring big increases to the payroll—and blaming it on ticket prices.

(3) Elias was simply following the Astros’ blueprint he was once part of: Be cautious, trust your player development—and don’t overspend on big free agents. As the Astros rebuilt, they also had a surprise season, making the playoffs as a wild card in 2015. But that didn’t lead to an emptying of the coffers. When the Astros did need to make a big move, they did it via trades that brought in players with shorter long-term commitments than would have been required to sign a comparable free agent: Verlander in 2017, Gerrit Cole in 2018 and Zack Greinke in 2019. It helped that the Astros made three great trades in which the only significant major leaguer they traded away was Joe Musgrove.

So the Orioles played it safe—but it has worked out.

I was at the game yesterday. It was fantastic. The best game I've been to in a very long time.

As long as we've got an Orioles post: what are long-term thoughts on Jackson Holliday? It seems to me that he's got an excellent hit tool and batting eye, but that if there's real stardom awaiting him he'll need to develop some power. Now, I'm fairly optimistic about this, since he's only 19. But he's also listed at 6'0" and 185, which means it's not like he's a bean pole with lots of room for growth.

11 homers and 51 total XBH across four levels at age 19 seems unproblematic.

Actually looks pretty damn similar to Mike Trout's stat line on the way up at the same age (2010 and 2011).

might be the second-best prospect in baseball - many lists put him there - but also the "second-best Jackson."

:)

the Brewers just promoted OF Jackson Chourio, also a teenager, to AAA today after he finished his AA postseason. he tops many prospect lists.

both are considered can't miss

Chourio is listed at 6-1, 165 and is 3 months younger than Matt's kid
.336/.457/.803 slash in AA at Biloxi in 2023, with 22-89-84-43

When the 86-76 Astros won the WC in 2015 they obviously had a pretty good team, but it wasn't like they'd emptied out their minor leagues to get there. Going into the next season Houston still had three prospects in the minor league top 50 (w/Bregman at #22), and five total in the top 100 (w/Tucker at #74). The 2023 Orioles are on a pace to win 102 games and finish with the best record in the AL, but like the Astros of eight years ago their minor league system is nevertheless stacked with top prospects. Baltimore currently has six players in the minor league top 50, including teens Holliday and Sam Basallo (.333/.443/.688 at AA).

The Astros went from being pretty good to damn near a dynasty by keeping their good prospects and trading the rest for top starters. If Elias can do anything like that then sky's the limit in Baltimore.

If ownership doesn't screw it up, this Orioles team is poised to have the kind of run they did during the Earl Weaver years. They need a reliable rotation anchor -- but Grayson Rodriguez has the talent to become one. Not that Bradish and Kremer (despite the manbun) are any slouches themselves.

As long as we've got an Orioles post: what are long-term thoughts on Jackson Holliday?

I presume plan is to have an IF of Mountcastle/O'Hearn at first, Westburg at second, Gunnar at third and Holliday at short whenever it is Holliday is ready. Elias will presumably not sign Frazier, and will likely trade Ramon Urias and/or Jorge Mateo, though either could be utility IF (Urias is a much better hitter, Mateo can play a better short and OF, but Urias is a gold glove winner!).

This team has been so much fun to watch every day this season. Two terrific young hitters drafted back to back, some pitchers that have really taken a giant step forward (Bradish, Kremer), some veterans that have really served their time (Mullins, Hays, Santander, Mountcastle), and some castoffs that have shown a tremendous amount of improvement (O'Hearn, McCann) and a bullpen that has been pieced together by Elias and utilized more effectively than any could imagine by an afterthought manager prospect. This team is up there with the 1989 and 2012 teams as the most enjoyable squads in my lifetime.

Being an Oriole fan is not too bad today. It's been a long road.
