MLB Postseason Picture: Twins extend AL Central lead with dramatic win

It’s September, so the baseball games matter a little more. That’s why every day between now and the start of the postseason we’ll keep you updated on baseball’s postseason picture.

The Minnesota Twins briefly lost their grip on the AL Central lead last month.

They’re determined to not let that happen again.

Minnesota extended its rebuilt lead to 6.5 games over the Cleveland Indians with a dramatic 2-1 win against the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.

An update, for those curious about how the playoff hunt is going.

The ease of the Twins' schedule made this pretty likely. They had 13 games against the White Sox and Detroit, pretty predictably going 9-4. They also swept 4 at Texas which was unexpected. They're into the tough part of their remaining schedule with 3 at home vs Cle, 3 at home vs Nats then 3 at Cle. But then they finish with 13 straight against White Sox, Tigers and Royals. Cle also had a string of 10 against CWS, KC, Det going 7-3 but their other games were Bos, Yanks, Mets and Tampa, going a dismal 3-10. And it doesn't get easier in a relative sense for them as they get Angels, Phils and Nats (though the Nats will likely be in playoff rest/prep mode by then) while the Twins get their easy cruise. Cle has to take 5 of 6 off the Twins to have a chance (not exactly a shock given a 6.5 deficit with 21 to go).
