MLB Rumors: Angels Pursuing ‘Significant’ Starting Pitcher

Some examples of rumored goings-on with the Winter Meetings:

- The Angels are still reportedly planning to add a “significant” starting pitcher prior to the 2020 season and are pursing Madison Bumgarner, Hyun-jin Ryu, Dallas Keuchel or a trade for Jon Gray. (Jon Morosi, MLB Network)

- The Angels, after missing out on signing Gerrit Cole, have “expressed interest” in trading for Indians righthander Corey Kluber. A two-time Cy Young winner, Kluber is coming off an injury-filled 2019 season. Anthony Rendon remains the Angels’ priority, but they’re open to other options. (Fabian Ardaya, The Athletic)

- The Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Indians continue to engage in “serious” trade discussions for All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor. Cleveland is seeking a package from the Dodgers including top prospects Gavin Lux and Dustin May. (Bob Nightengale, USA Today)

- The Yankees are interested in free agent catcher Martin Maldonado. In 2019, Gerrit Cole posted a 1.57 ERA and .471 opponent OPS in 10 starts with Maldonado, his best with any Houston catcher last season. (Mark Feinsand, MLB Network)

This enough excitement for you, Sports Illustrated?

If I had Simmons and Rendon as the left side of my infield I would be looking at Keuchel. Just keep throwing groundballs like Tudor in front of Ozzie Smith.

Has anyone ever figured out how significantly you can leverage a great infield or outfield defense with extreme GB or FB pitchers?

Porcello to the Metropolitans, apparently.

Seems like we are in for a ton of NOTHING until the hall of fame votes after this crazy week.

Porcello AND Wacha?!?!?! This is a banner offseason indeed!!

who says the Mets DON'T trade Thor now, maybe for a CF and/or bullpen help

I think part of the problem is that things can change rather quickly. Obviously the Angels have Rendon for a while now, but Simmons is only signed for next year. So you sign Keuchel to a 4 year deal, then Simmons leaves and what happens? Plus, who's to say how long Rendon will be an elite defender?

I feel like there may be a Red Sox/Mets trade that could work in theory. Mets get JBJ and Price, Red Sox get Thor. Whatever prospects/other players to round it out if necessary.

"Significant" can only mean Bartolo Colon.

That would be an absolutely disastrous (I mean Kazmir for Zambrano level) trade for the Mets, unless the Red Sox threw in multiple top prospects and cash. Price has huge negative value, and JBJ is worth ~0; he was a non-tender candidate.

For Bradley Jr. and Price, I'd think the Mets would give up junk like Lowrie, Familia, maybe Matz, maybe Dominic Smith.

Why would the Mets give up anything? Are you assuming the Red Sox are paying 60% of Price's deal?

Price + JBJ at their current salaries is worth less than nothing. No team would take the pair for free. Price would clear waivers.

I feel like the Red Sox would need to throw in Mookie Betts (at least) to make that deal work. Their farm system is garbage and that trade is hugely lopsided in the Red Sox favor.

Conveniently, Fangraphs has a post up on Price's trade value. They estimate he is worth -$60M.

Ummmm, Gardner is a FA. Even barring that complete show-stopper, it's a horrible deal for the Mets, and would leave the Yankees w/o a CF.

He just agreed to a deal with the Yankees. He as 10/5 rights.

Great news! He will never waive those rights, and he's the starting CF, so the point is moot anyway.

I'm hoping that Howie was joking, but I don't think that the Michael Wacha signing is going to push Syndergaard off the team.

No way. The Mets are in win now mode. Why trade Syndergaard unless it's for a top-talent? The only real hole on OF is CF. What good young CF are available?

Replace "Thor" with "Cano" and it makes sense for the Mets.

And for the Sox? They don't seem to have a 2B right now.

If the Mets have money now (with insider trading boy), they should kick the tires on Betts. Synderaard and Cano for Betts and Price?

And then give Mookie the $400M.
   26. PreservedFish Posted: December 12, 2019 at 12:08 PM (#5908134)
Mookies do belong in Queens, per tradition.

This sentence is true.

Mets get Gardner and Tanaka, Yankees get Thor.

Not this one.

Intriguing idea, snapper- I don't do that if I am Boston, but might if the Mets add Dom Smith.

I was mentally playing around with the contours of a Cano/Price trade before the Wacha/Porcello signings. Even still, I suspect Price could provide pretty significant value out of the bullpen, though the money is real rich.

If I thought I could extend Betts, I'd do that as the Mets. Offer him $400/12 with the deal contingent on the extension.

It's hard to imagine any player turning down $400M.

Earl Weaver figured it out with Jim Palmer

Pedroia's supposedly ready to play, so that ought to cover them for five or six games, until he gets hurt again.

Or hell, maybe they could have Mookie move back onto the dirt for a year.

Price for Wil Myers, even-up, who says no? Padres get a rotation upgrade, and the Sox save about $12M a year.

Padres. I'm not even sure Price is going to pitch next year.
