MLB rumors: Giants sign veteran infielder Wilmer Flores to two-year contract extension

The San Francisco Giants have been unable to repeat their 2021 magic in 2022, though they will keep one of their core contributors around in 2023 and 2024. The Giants have agreed to a two-year contract extension with infielder Wilmer Flores, reports the New York Post. There’s a mutual option for a third year. San Francisco has not confirmed the signing.

Flores, 31, is wrapping up his third season with the Giants. He joined the team on a two-year, $6.25 million contract in February 2020, and San Francisco picked up a $3.5 million club option to retain him in 2022. The new contract locks Flores in through 2024 with the mutual option covering 2025. Financial terms of the new extension are unknown.

Once a liability with shaky defense and low on-base percentages, Flores has closed up the holes in his game and is now a steady everyday player who no longer needs to be platooned. He owns a .251/.324/.446 batting line with 48 homers in three seasons with the Giants and has been a better than league average hitter every year since 2016.

That seems a bit rich but you save a lot of kleenex costs by keeping him around. :-)

I'm skeptical of multi-year contracts for players his age who are not superstars. Last year I got a lot of grief for being skeptical of Brandon Crawford's extension and this year supported my skepticism. I hope I'm wrong about Flores.

Flores is getting paid less than half of what Crawford is getting. Makes sense, as Crawford was legitimately good last year (6 WAR, 4 WAA) whereas Flores has been reliably average for many years.

I like this deal for the Giants. You can't win with a dozen Floreses at this price, but 1 or 2 are pretty useful on a team that realistically hopes to contend.

just because i haven't seen him mentioned elsewhere here -- did you know that the tigers have his brother, also named wilmer flores, in their system as a fast rising pitching prospect? (i think he'll ultimately be a big league reliever, but a solid one)

He is still a lousy defender who doesn't hit well enough to play first and is a real liability at any other position. Still does not walk enough. Seems like a nice guy, so good for him.

Always happy to see Wilmer Flores getting paid.

Even if Wilmer eventually shifts to a part-time role, $13M/2 seems very fair.

He actually appears to be walking at a decent rate the last few seasons. He has walked 90 times versus 852 at-bats. That is more than respectable. He still has not had very good on base percentages because his batting average has dipped a little bit but he seems like a very adequate part-time player who does not kill you when asked to play a bit more than that.

I always do wonder what would have happened in an alternate universe if he was allowed to play shortstop more regularly after 2015. He went from being the starting shortstop at 23 years old for team then went to the World Series to never really playing that position again.

He'd be better than Ruf.

#3: Definitely a useful guy to have around, probably even worth tying up for 2 years but as the intro notes, they were able to get him for 2/$6.25 last time (or 3/$9.5 per b-r). What has he done to deserve double the AAV? Who were they competing against? Etc. Obviously 2/$13 is chicken feed in the big picture and I don't imagine anybody is upset that Flores is getting paid, it's just probably not the most efficient use of resources by internet GM standards.
