MLB Rumors: Hyun-Jin Ryu Deal Could Exceed Madison Bumgarner’s $17 Million Average

Stephen Strasburg has signed. So too has Madison Bumgarner and Zach Wheeler. The next best starter on the market, Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Just one day after Bumgarner inked a five-year, $85 million deal with the Diamondbacks for an average annual salary of $17 million, people within baseball are expecting Ryu to fetch a larger contract in terms of annual value, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Rosenthal notes that a number of teams still could use some starting pitching help, including the Blue Jays, Angels, Twins and White Sox. While Ryu is 33 years old and has an extensive injury history, he was among the NL Cy Young award finalists this past season, winning 14 games with a 2.32 ERA and 1.007 WHIP.

If given a choice between the Bumgarner contract and a hypothetical Ryu contract for the same or a great amount, which would you take?

This is silly.

"Could" exceed.

Yes, and it "Could Not" exceed.

(FTR, I do think Ryu is getting more than Bumgarner, but come on).

Bumgarner. Ryu's great and all, but he's 33 and has zero durability. Dude pitcherd 396 innings over the last 4 seasons. Actually 5. He didn't pitch at all in 2015.

Ryu should get a short, high AAV deal with vesting options.

Something like 2/45 with 2 one-year team options at $20M, which vest into player options if he throws 300 IP in the previous two seasons.

Put me with #2 -- and note the headline doesn't say he "could" get a bigger contract, just a higher AAV. Ryu certainly looks like the higher quality pitcher these days but you know you'd be lucky to get 150 innings a year out of him. Those 150 innings might be worth 3 wins or so but you're unlikely to get that for 5 years. So something like Snapper's idea seems reasonable. Obviously there are dollar values where it would make sense to sign Ryu long-term if he values that type of security but I'm pretty sure those would need to come in lower than Bumgarner in guaranteed money -- say, 5/$65 with some innings incentives.
