MLB umpire Joe West wins $500K defamation suit against ex-player who accused him of rigging strike zone

Joe West is a regular butt of jokes about poor MLB umpiring.

One former player’s story about the umpire cost him six figures.

West sued four-time MLB All-Star Paul Lo Duca for defamation after Lo Duca accused him on a podcast of trading strike calls for off-field favors. A Manhattan Supreme Court judge ruled in West’s favor on Monday and ordered Lo Duca to pay him $500,000 plus interest.

Lo Duca had accused West of changing the strike zone in favor of former New York Mets pitcher Billy Wagner in exchange for use of Wagner’s 1957 Chevy. West accused Lo Duca of fabricating the story and consequently harming his chances of making the Hall of Fame.

Judge John Kelley agreed with West and ruled in his favor Monday after Lo Duca declined to appear in court or to address the allegations, according to the New York Daily News.

Words fail me. Can umpires be inducted as compilers of bad calls and asshattery for over thirty years?!?!?!?!?!

The Country Music Hall of Fame, I assume.

The BBTF HoF next to Murray Chass and ... which LA sportswriter was that who always had us annoyed?

Sounds like either Bill Plaschke or TJ Simers....

Lo Duca does seem to have fabricated the story. There's no game that's even remotely close to that.

I’m not a Joe West fan but this is inexcusable behavior by LoDuca.

Yeah, in a LoDuca/West dispute, I'd have no problem siding with West.

By coincidence, wasn't it one of them who retroactively canonized Lo Duca when he was traded away from LA?

Yes, Plaschke made Lo Duca his cause célèbre in going after "Google Boy" Paul DePodesta.

Ironically, in retrospect it seems DePodesta actually traded Lo Duca due to his intangibles.

Plaschke thundered about the loduca trade, said the dodgers were irreparably harmed etc. ... he is just a numbskull sportswriter in the vein of people like chass and wilbon who idolize bunts and 'the little things' and are happy to be ignorant about things like metrics. you can catch him 'on around the horn' on ESPN, a really yecchy show.

Simers, on the other hand, was the one who irritated everybody including a lot of folks here at BBTF who didn't like his schtick, which was to take a poke at everybody in one way or another. he had a running feud with Jeff Kent and a number of other players who were thin skinned. Kent eventually got the gag, as did a couple of other people. I found simers amusing at times, at least compared to plaschke he actually could write, but i could also see how his act could wear thin with self-important athletes.

Simers, to his credit, also organized a really neat thing years ago, a night of sitting and talking to Joe Torre and Sandy Koufax on a stage in the Staples Center. They agreed when he told them it was for a charity. i think every jewish kid from brooklyn who moved to Los Angeles in the 60s was there that night, and it really was fun.

In fairness, the Dodgers have never really recovered.

Simers won a $15 million age discrimination lawsuit against the LA Times a few years ago. The amount of the judgment was overturned on appeal and I'm not sure where it currently stands.

It looks like the Simers case is still active in LA Superior Court. If you're really into court dockets, you can search by case number (BC524471) on this site.

Great ending to the Sox/Twins game, from a Sox fan perspective.
