MLB Umpires to Explain Replay Review Decisions Via Microphone for 2020 Season

Umpires in MLB will begin communicating the decisions for video reviews to fans by microphone during the 2020 season, according to ESPN’s Pedro Gomez.

Gomez added umpires “may also explain rules, if necessary.”

MLB’s Replay Operations Center is tasked with conducting the reviews and relaying the decisions to umpires on the field. Allowing an umpire to explain the outcome—much like an NFL referee—should provide a level of transparency for fans.

Having said that, the change is unlikely to eliminate the controversy that can grow from contentious calls on the field.

It takes hard work to come up with such a bad idea…..

I don't think it's a bad idea explaining calls to the fans. I'm not sure the umpires themselves are good verbal explainers. I think calls should be supplemented by text on the scoreboard. From the beginning of replay I always thought there should be a small dedicated studio in Chelsea where replay umpires, or more likely a spokeperson, would be available for interviews regarding calls. Maybe a scoreboard explanation could send in-park fans to a link to the interview where the spokeman explains the call.

This is obviously what draws people to the NFL.

They should do their screaming ball and strike calls over a microphone too.

I look forward to hearing CB Bucknor and Angel Hernandez try to explain their terrible calls.

This is a great idea. I hate replay but having umpires explain why a replay occurred is a good idea. They’ll screw it up I’m sure but hey, more explanation is good.

I don't want to hear them explain things. I DO want to hear what they're saying and hearing though the headsets. If you have that you don't need an announcement or explanation.

Explanation, shmexplanation. I want to see interpretive dance.

Most of what the NFL referee says over the mic is rote, even on replay review. In most cases the umps will be fine.

100% concur. It'll also add another data point to identify which umps are good at their jobs and which aren't.

YMMV. I think this sounds nightmarish.

I just hope the umps take their time and explain things completely and deliberately, perhaps repeating themselves if necessary. The game just moves along too quickly now.

[fumbles with microphone for 30 seconds]
"The Padres are challenging the ruling on the field, that the runner was safe at second base."
[manager signals him over.]
[60 second talk]
[fumbles with microphone for 30 seconds]
"That, uh ... the Padres are challenging the ruling on the field, that the runner did not come off the bag after initially making contact with second base."
[fumbles with microphone for 30 seconds]
[90 second review]
[fumbles with microphone for 30 seconds]
"The call on the field is upheld. The runner..."
[pause for applause]
"... the runner did not lose contact with the base. Play ball!"

They're just announcing the *outcome* of the replay, right?

Anyway, sounds like the absolute worst idea ever, and I am a big fan of replay.

This is part and parcel of MLB's general idea that replay is a feature that should be marketed and promoted and sold to the fans.

It's almost like MLB is intentionally trying to #### up its product at this point.

How much you want to bet that there will be a mandatory script that goes something like this?

"We have considered this Carfax.com replay challenge, brought to you by Prudential. The Camping World ruling on the field was that the runner was safe. Upon further review powered by Intel, we have concluded that the ball was in the first baseman's glove before the runner's foot touched the base. Don't miss Spider-Man and Iron Man vs. Thor and Captain America: Marvel Doubles Tennis, only in theaters starting this weekend."

I'm sure someone's pitching that right now, but given the umpire talent and MLB's generally feckless manner of dealing with its employees, I think it's more likely that these announcements will be made reluctantly and awkwardly, resulting in gruff and only barely intelligible speech.

If they actually think this is wanted or necessary, just add the ####### booth ump who can both review the calls and make the announcements more quickly. Cheap #######.
