MLB updates harassment policy after Jared Porter, Mickey Callaway allegations

As first reported by The Athletic and confirmed by an industry source, the revised code of conduct outlines specific repercussions — “a warning, a suspension, termination of employment, or any other measures available to a Club or the Commissioner” — for those who behave “contrary to MLB’s Principles.” This language will be detailed on a flier to be posted in every team’s clubhouse. The MLB Players Association has signed off on this significant modification.

In addition to more specific consequences for rule-breakers, MLB will provide an anonymous hotline, run by a third party, where incidents of harassment can be reported. Moreover, team executives will undergo “anti-harassment and discrimination training” during spring training.

“a warning, a suspension, termination of employment (...) for those who behave “contrary to MLB’s Principles.”

I'm dying to hear with the "MLB’s Principles" are. (Methinks they change whenever the wind does.)

The hotline will put an end to this overnight. Those work well

I’d be interested if bbc is still around. I’d love her thoughts on what should be done to avoid these kinds of hiring errors. How should teams act to know in advance about these things? Obviously the ideal things is guys would stop being pervs but I think that’s a pipe dream. In such a male oriented business what should a hiring team do? Are there questions to be asked in an interview that would shed light on this? I suspect there is a way to suss this out but I think it’s clear most men don’t know how to achieve that.

From all accounts Porter got rave reviews, but teams could probably do better by not hiring raging ######## like Callaway.

#3 no organization will completely eliminate these types of things, but a few things I think would help (1) creating an environment where women can safely report these things, (2) Actual consequences for guys who commit or facilitate this type of behavior (some guys get away with it for decades even when the institution is aware) (3) Involve women in the hiring process — talk to them as references, etc. (4) hire and promote more women in the organization.

Dave your third point is the one I’m most interested in, how does a pro sports team, massively skewed to male employees, get women involved in the hiring process? Would simply having a woman in the room help? That’s the part of this that seems like it would be most challenging.

I think this is the only thing that will make a long-term difference. If people aren't punished for the behavior, it will continue.
