MLB, USA Baseball announce new format for Appalachian League

The Appalachian League will become a part of the Prospect Development Pipeline (“PDP”), the collaborative effort between MLB and USA Baseball that establishes a player development pathway for amateur baseball players in the United States, and will be an integral part of the identification and development process for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and other future national teams. Appalachian League participants will receive extensive visibility to MLB Club scouts through both in-person observation and state-of-the-art scouting technology. Players will receive instruction from former MLB players and educational programming designed to prepare them for careers as professional athletes. Plans include a 54-game regular season and an annual All-Star Game. MLB and USA Baseball will provide support for the league’s staffing, player participation and administrative functions. The parties are in communication with the NCAA to ensure athlete eligibility requirements are met.

To herald the start of this exciting new format, each of the 10 teams in the Appalachian League have decided to undertake a process for changing their names and logos to incorporate symbols and images important to their respective local communities, to be adopted before the 2021 season.

Getting college players to fill the teams should get them around the issue of low minor league pay.

How appropriate that there will be no foreigners playing ball in the Appalachian League.

A rising freshman is a recently graduated high school senior, correct? I am going to assume this league takes place after the MLB draft. Will players be able to play in the league if they have been drafted?

I wonder if that’s a mistake in the article. Does not make sense to have a league for rising freshmen, who have not yet attended college, may have been drafted, and are probably in negotiations for a pro contract. Makes more sense for rising sophs and jrs.

I believe it means someone who has just completed their freshman year of college. "Rising" probably just means "exciting!"

It would make a lot more sense if the league was for players who just completed their freshman or sophomore years (assuming not draft eligible sophs). You wouldn't want drafted players in the league.

Since there is a partnership with USA baseball I'm going to assume they will use this league to help choose the USA Baseball Collegiate National team. That team is all freshmen and sophomores.

This could kill off the Cape Cod league, at the very least it would will become much less significant

The excerpt suggests that's a good guess DL. :-)

This doesn't sound good for summer college leagues.

I think there are enough college players to go around. There are 297 D1 teams, not to mention the cream of the crop for D2 and D3. They're adding 10 teams to the mix. There are 36 wood bat LEAGUES already. Maybe the Mountain Atlantic League folds due to the proximity.

I was wondering how long they could go with just being called the Johnson City Cardinals, Princeton Rays, Danville Braves, etc while every other minor league team gets a wacky nickname that will surely never seem stupid or dated, generated by the advertising wizards at Brandiose.

Big race to see who gets "Moonshiners" first!
