MLB’s top 25 players under 25: Tatis, Acuna, Soto battle for top spot; Yankees’ Torres in top five

In the year 2021, baseball is a young man’s game. Young players come up from the minors and have an immediate impact more than ever before. Juan Soto batted cleanup for a World Series champion at age 20. Ronald Acuna Jr. flirted with a 40-40 season at age 21. At age 22, Bryce Harper became one of only 17 players in the Expansion Era to post a 195 OPS+ or better.

These days the best teams feature at least one bona fide superstar who isn’t yet old enough to rent a car. Young, cheap players who provide immense value are the sport’s most valuable commodity, and teams are better at player development than ever. Case in point: 23 players age 22 or younger have put up a 125 OPS+ since 2000, more than the previous three decades combined (20).

Because young players are so vital, we here at CBS Sports have compiled a ranking of the 25 best players under the age of 25.

No big surprises (more of the "oh yeah, that guy" as you move down the list) and a fair number of 24-yos. Note the list is sorted by their expected 2021 value not long-term value or anny other combo of age and talent. As such the solid but, as yet, unspectacular Victor Robles makes the list near the end -- which is probably correct by their criteria. The other end of that is why Wander Franco is only #20.

Interesting that Adley Rutschman from the Orioles makes the list (2019 draft pick that didn't play in 2020 and put up okay numbers in Rk/A-/A ball [.774 OPS combined] as a 21 year old), but Ryan Mountcastle was left off it (played in the majors last year and put up a 140 OPS+ in his 35 game debut, and had previously done quite well in AA/AAA the two previous years).

As a Jay fan I love seeing 2 in the top 10. Bo Bichette being top 5 is understandable - if healthy he should be an MVP type candidate imo - he is a lot of fun to watch play. Vlad at 10 makes sense, if his spring is an indicator he might be fighting for #1 next year (he hit a triple - clearly losing that weight is for real, anyone who has seen him on TV would know the size difference is drastic - BR stats for spring 529/625/941 Avg/OBP/Slg. yeah just 24 PA but very nice sign.

He does seem to fit on the screen a lot better.
