Moonshot: The Rocket Ball Has Disappeared In October - Baseball ProspectusBaseball Prospectus

But this change is very different. Almost overnight within the same season, the ball has been replaced by one with wholly distinct characteristics, ranging from the speed with which it leaves the bat to the distance it travels. It’s hard to believe that MLB, which owns the company that produces the baseballs, would consciously approve a change to their manufacturing on the eve of the most important month of the season, but it’s also hard to believe that this would happen by accident.

I hadn’t noticed. Too happy about the bombs hit by Rendon, Soto, and Howie.

With the extra data from the last couple of days, all the concerns about small sample size should be thrown out the window. The odds that you would pick 18 games with an average drag as high as we saw in the Division Series are less than one in 1 million.

It occurs to me that behavior such as tampering with the ball to deliberately modify outcomes as the league begins to invest itself into legalized sports betting is fundamentally the same sort of behavior that, when done by a player, gets them banned from the game for life.

I have no idea what MLB thinks it’s gaining by denying everything. They have no credibility on the subject anyway and all the announced teams are openly talking about it. Makes you wonder what they’re really up to.

As is pointed out here doing this intentionally without telling anyone is a point shaving scheme. You should probably avoid any thoughts you might do that when you’re about to legalize gambling.

There’re two options here:
MLB bought Rawlings and can now no longer make a baseball with any consistency
Or
They’re doing all of this on purpose.
