“My Wide World” by Dave Parker

After I became a major leaguer for good with the Pirates in 1973, Saturday afternoon always involved ABC Sports. Before a night game or a quick-pitched nine innings, me and the boys would be at our lockers in the clubhouse at Three Rivers or on the road while auto racing played on the TV. I can almost hear that Scottish dude now — Jackie Stewart, the color commentator for racing. Watching a clip of him today brings me right back to being with the fellas — post-game beers with Willie Stargell, Dock Ellis and Larry Demery, Manny Sanguillen, Rennie Stennett, my manager Danny Murtaugh. Jackie Stewart’s voice is like a damn portal to my past, a glorious Miller Time gone by.

My first thought when I started reading was like, "he's not remembering this right cause the Cosell/Ali stuff was later in the 70s and he's growing up in the late 60s." But then you realize he's an absolute ABC TV sports nut and he remembers all these old TV shows. I never would have thought Dave Parker to be a memory sort of guy sort of like when they asked Charlie Watts about some old gigs the Stones played and he's like "you really should talk to Keith about that, he remembers everything."

The Cobra in his sixties is a vastly more fascinating cat than I ever realized when he was playing ball.

I really thought the title had something to do with an eating disorder or something.

I think this pic has become almost obligatory in Parker threads.

I used to watch WWS most weekends as a kid. (Hopefully mostly the winter ones when there was nothing to do outside and usually no real sports on TV.) Lumberjacking before it was cool! While I was certainly no Dick Button, I got to the point where I could halfway decently judge a figure skating performance. Turned out I'd watch darn near any competition, even really dull ones. Yet somehow the CBS Sports "Spectacular" completely failed to replicate that formula.

And sure I watched way too much bowling, way too much stock car. None of that survived adolescence. Or at least none of it survived the expansion of college and pro basketball (and lesser extent football) across weekend netwrok TV to better distract me. I suppose it seems strange to anybody born in the last 40-50 years that there was once a time when there wasn't wall-to-wall coverage of college basketball. (It seems strange to me that I can discuss people born 40-50 years ago and that group is younger than me.)

As late as 1985 I guess the march madness was like 32 teams w half getting buys. In 1974 it was really odd like 28 teams or so. That one where david thmpson got knocked out cold vs UPitt..and Md lost to NCSt??
