Nationals, Brad Hand agree to one-year, $10.5 million deal, per reports

The Washington Nationals have agreed to sign free agent left-handed reliever Brad Hand, per multiple reports. The deal is for one year and $10.5 million, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

What’s interesting here is that toward the beginning of this offseason, Cleveland placed Hand on outright waivers, hoping another club would take him for one year and $10 million off its hands. No team did and Cleveland had to pay the buyout of $1 million in declining the option, so Hand actually comes out ahead by $1.5 million than if his option had simply been picked up.

Hand, 30, led the majors with 16 saves last season while pitching to a 2.05 ERA and 0.77 WHIP with 29 strikeouts against just four walks.

Another 1/$10 deal. Looks like hand just wanted enough to beat his option price.

Dammit. The Angels could've really used that guy. I'm irritated they weren't willing to go to 11.

I still don't get why no one claimed him on waivers.

Such as, to pull an example out of thin air, the Nationals.

No one claimed him on waivers because there was more uncertainty as to where the bottom was at the time this happened. Non-tenders hadn’t happened yet. The ramp up in COVID was just happening. I’m not even sure news of the vaccine had been announced yet. At that point you might think the going price was $5 million. It’s hard to buy at the bottom and sell at the top.

Perhaps teams were worried about his injury status? I'm assuming you can't make a claim contingent on passing a physical.

I would assume the Duke is right about this. Teams have had an extra three months now to sort out the free agent market and figure out their COVID-adjusted finances for 2021.

#5 makes some sense, but I think you still take a gamble that you're getting a steal. I also don't understand why the Sox would want to pay Hendricks 4/$52 when they could get Hand on a cheap one year deal.

So the Nationals say Aloha, Mr. Hand.

You have got to hand it to Mike Rizzo.
He makes astute player skill judgements and reasonable contracts, accordingly.
I am sure the Lerner’s truly appreciate having him as GM, I know I do as a fan.

I still don't get why no one claimed him on waivers.

Or offered a pair on low minors prospects to Cleveland before they put him on waivers. After all, a Brad in Hand is worth 2 in the bushes.

Golf clap.

Well, now the whole story is out. He’s got large deferrals in the deal so the $500k extra is probably a swag at lost interest on the deferrals. So basically it’s a 1/10 deal
