Nationals broadcaster F.P. Santangelo accused of sexual assault, pulled from games

A 31-year-old woman told The Athletic that Santangelo made unwanted advances and sexually assaulted her several years ago, all while ignoring her repeatedly telling him to stop.

The woman, who spoke to The Athletic on the condition of anonymity, first accused Santangelo in an anonymous Instagram post — which the Nationals and MASN saw. She then detailed the encounter to The Athletic.

The woman said that Santangelo sent her “angry text messages” and even blocked her on all social media after their one in-person interaction. She said she is not seeking a formal complaint or any compensation. She is not an employee of the Nationals, MASN or the Baltimore Orioles — which holds the majority ownership of the network.

“If I never saw him again, I’d be perfectly happy,” she said, via The Athletic. “But he’s well known and it is bothersome to see someone in his private life not be respectful of people. I don’t have any motives behind this other than I wanted to avoid this happening to other women.”

Santangelo has worked as the Nationals’ color commentator since 2011. He was hired by MASN, but the team approves those hires. He was taken off the air last weekend for the Nationals’ series against Miami, a move that was reportedly unplanned. He then was pulled at the last minute from Thursday’s game against the Braves. Santangelo did call Friday’s game against the Yankees, however, and worked Wednesday’s game too.

There have always been rumors that Santangelo was a bit creepy in bars. He's not a great announcer, but he does have a generally fun on-air presence.

This sucks.

Rather difficult to judge the credibility of an anonymous accusation concerning a one-time, non-work encounter several years ago. I continue to doubt the wisdom of employers attempting to adjudicate misconduct allegations when the complaining party declines to pursue available civil or criminal legal remedies. I suppose some details will eventually emerge, but MASN reinstating Santangelo after some investigation does suggest that proof may have been lacking at that point, or that it initially botched the inquiry.

Santangelo, Mike Kinkade and Charlie Haeger are the only big leaguers born in my birth town of Livonia, Michigan. (I actually grew up in Westland, which has never produced an MLB player, but has produced an NHL player.)

EDIT: No NFL or NBA players, either.

I'm just glad to get Santangelo off the air, whether he's guilty or not. His voice is more suited to flavored water commercials than it is to baseball announcing. What a contrast between him and Jim Palmer.

I read elsewhere in multiple places what #1 said, that people say that he goes to bars, gets drunk, and creeps on women aggressively.

re: #2 I don't completely agree with you, but that aside, consider that the Nats are likely privvy to other information related to his general conduct and this may be more of a lifetime achievement award firing, rather than a single event.

I agree with #4, FP is one of the very worst MLB broadcasters and I won't watch him. And it's not just because of his voice... just about everything he says makes me cringe.

It's nice and convenient in life when the ######## turn out to also be the untalented.

Now if only Sterling and Dick Vitale could be caught with a headless body in a topless bar.

What a contrast between him and Jim Palmer.

Palmer is ####### great though. He'd be near the top of my list if I had to build a booth from scratch
