Nationals extend manager Davey Martinez, close to deal with GM Mike Rizzo: Sources

As the Washington Nationals remain for sale, ownership is taking steps to keep the architects of their 2019 World Series championship team.

The Nationals have signed manager Davey Martinez to a two-year contract extension and general manager Mike Rizzo also is close to a new deal, according to sources briefed on the discussions.

Martinez, 58, also is getting a club option for a third year. Rizzo, 62, is expected to sign a deal of similar length. Both are completing the option years on their current agreements.

Really? If there's a team that could probably use some new blood, surely it's the Nats. And I assume that, by today's standards, both these guys are reasonably expensive given how long they've been at it. Of course I don't watch the Nats so I have nothing specific on Davey, he might be doing a great job with poor resources. But the kids don't seem to be taking big steps forward which suggests either Davey's not doing a great job with them or Rizzo got the wrong young guys in trades and drafts. (Note, the kids are all doing "fine", they're not disasters.)

Wouldn't you leave it open ended for the new owner? And why is the sale taking so long?

Perhaps this is happening because Leonsis wants to retain them, but the timeline of getting a sale approved would extend beyond the expiration of their contracts when the season ends. Dunno if Leonsis and MLB are squabbling about how leveraged his bid is, if the MASN kerfuffle is complicating matters, or other issues are slowing the process.

The Nationals have already won more games (57) than last year (55), and are on pace to win ~ 20 more than last season. That doesn’t seem to be grounds to clean house, and the timing might be such that any new owners wouldn’t be in place to hire replacements until way late in the offseason cycle. If you’re going to have holdovers, might as well keep those who still retain some of the 2019 World Series winner’s glow.

When did he become "Davey"?

Edit: I guess he has been called that by many for some time. Just sounded odd to me.

Martinez' wife is said to be grateful.

Martinez was officially extended. Rizzo has not been signed yet. Rizzo is from Chicago. Chicago just fired their GM.

This sale has been going on so long it feels like the Fed began raising interest rates since the initial bid. I mean that's not literally true, but it feels like forever. But I do wonder if the changing media revenue landscape might be messing with their projections. If they end up under-capitalized because of higher interest payments or Angelos' MASN can't/won't make their payments, the league won't want yet another beggar on the doorstep looking for revenue replacement.

If MASN doesn’t pay, it would be in breach of contract which should let the Nationals make their own deal elsewhere. That would be especially good news for leading bidder Ted Leonsis, owner of the Capitals & Wizards, as well as the cable TV network that carries their games, which would likely pick up the Nationals games if the MASN deal is voided. Reportedly, the Nationals sale has dragged along because of the difficulty in valuing their disputed media rights.
