Makeup and character matter. Romero is a former first-round pick. Despite being twice suspended and eventually dismissed from the University of Houston baseball team during the spring of his draft year, the southpaw landed in Washington with the 25th overall pick in the 2017 draft. Baseball America’s scouting report at the time noted Romero could’ve gone in the top 10 if not for questions about his maturity level, as he boasted a mid-90s fastball with an excellent slider.

Walt Davis Posted: November 14, 2022 at 10:15 PM (#6105556)No doubt character does matter but it's hardly determinative ... and it's not clear that off-field character matters much at all (i.e. every field has some hard-working successful alcoholics, addicts and abusers in it ... Miguel Cabrera for example has discussed his alcoholism).** Marcell Ozuna is still employed after all; LaRussa and Cox are in the HoF. What teams care about is reputational risk which is why Trevor Bauer may never pitch again.
** Which also assumes that alcoholism and addiciton are "makeup and character issues" rather than diseases. Without question driving drunk is a character issue so if the intro is only meant to apply to DWI then I withdraw this point.
