Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg to undergo surgery, out for season

Stephen Strasburg’s season is over.

The Washington Nationals’ starter hasn’t pitched since June 1 due to a nerve issue in his neck. Nationals manager Dave Martinez told reporters Tuesday that Strasburg will have surgery on Wednesday, ending his season.

Martinez said the diagnosis for Strasburg is neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome, per Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post.

Strasburg has been on the injured list for nearly two months but threw a bullpen session last week in an effort to return to the mound. However, the 33-year-old righty was still dealing with discomfort in his neck. It wasn’t the first setback for Strasburg during the recovery process.

Wow, that contract. He's due $35MM annually (~$11.5MM deferred per year) through 2026. He's pitched in just 26 innings since signing it, i.e. about $2.7MM per inning. Returning to form after TOS surgery is not as cut and dry as TJ surgery. He made a ###load of money with that 2019 playoff performance.

He got the exact same contract after the WS as Rendon. Supposedly the Angels were in on both and would have signed Strasburg if he wanted to go there. Dodged a bullet on that one, but Rendon not looking so great himself. At least he might come back and hit something down the stretch.

2019 made such a difference for Strasburg's career. He was in danger of being remembered as a guy who just never lived up to expectations and lost his big chance with the 2012 shutdown, but a 5.8 WAR season with a 5-0 postseason is a hell of a narrative changer. It's possible it wrecked his health, but if it did I'm glad he got paid first, even if it's gonna make it tough for the Nats to rebound for awhile.

Yeah, the World Series win was a big deal for him. He's like Mark Prior with a bit better luck.

He had a good 8 year run. Averaged 28 starts from 2012-19. Not an iron man but I’d take that any day from a top pitcher if the alternative is rolling the dice. His postseason run was one of the best I’ve ever seen. Off the top of my head, he’s in a class with Hershiser 88, Morris 91, and Bumgarner 14.
