Reposting FTO's primer RT because of my unreasonable love for Marcus Smart:
@StoolGreenie
In the 9 games Marcus Smart has played since returning to the lineup on 1/23 he has defended a total of 481 possesions

He has allowed 69 total points. 481 possessions. 69 points.

Celtics are 8-1. My God

I am in this very peculiar position, as a Wovles fan, to be rooting against any Wovles trades. Someone, hold me. This is not the normal.

Some of this may be Charlotte having a rough night, but the Bulls' backcourt is doing a solid job on defense tonight despite no Lonzo, Dosunmu, or Caruso. Coby White is having maybe the best defensive game I've seen from him.

The thing is there isn't really a lot of games to choose from.

Which makes this even more surprising. He's getting into position, redirecting guys attempting to cut to the rim, and fighting off screens effectively. It's like an entirely different player has inhabited his body.

The Lakers are probably going to lose to Portland who doesn't really have most of their projected starting lineup before the season started.

Lakers lose to Portland. They are now only 3 games ahead of the Trailblazers. It is not entirely impossible that the Lakers are going to miss even the play-in tournament. I mean Lillard could come back and the Lakers have a tough schedule.

They just play really sloppily. Can't blame Westbrook on this one.

They lost a game to Portland where they shot 55% from the field, 44% from 3. They only went 6-13 from the free throw line, had 21 turnovers, and gave up 11 offensive rebounds.

The Houston Rockets "remain steadfast" heading to the NBA trade deadline in their refusal to consider a trade of John Wall for Russell Westbrook unless the Los Angeles Lakers include their 2027 first round pick, one source told Marc Stein of Substack.

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn
ESPN Sources: Although Brooklyn Nets guard James Harden wants a trade to the Philadelphia 76ers, he has resisted making that formal request out of fear of the public backlash that would come with asking out of a second franchise in consecutive seasons.

Speaking of TV games, I read somewhere that the next seven Laker games are on national television.

Edit: Just checked. It goes ABC, ESPN, ESPN, ESPN, TNT, TNT, ABC. And I get it, obviously; it's LeBron, and it's the Lakers. They won a title two years ago. Still, this has to be the worst team ever to have seven straight games on national television.

Gentlemen, I think we need to add to that “big 3” list from a few pages back:

KANGZ: Barnes, Sabonis, Fox

22 and 14 for Sabonis!
Lamb pouring in 14 off the bench!!
Barnes reaching new levels of offensive efficiency with 30 on 8-11 shooting!!!

If you're LeBron, what do you do for the last part of your career? Stick with Lakers or move on? How would it look if he went back to Cleveland? Obvious ring chasing? Does the casual fan blame him for the roster construction in LA? He's never sacrificed money to make his team better, but maybe he does this last time for one more ring? Or a guarantee that his final team will draft his son?
   2618. PJ Martinez Posted: February 10, 2022 at 11:26 AM (#6064603)
As I recall, LeBron becomes a free agent the year that his son could conceivably be drafted. I've been assuming that he'll stay with the Lakers and then sign with any team that puts his son on the roster.

Apparently that Bagley trade is a four-teamer, and involves DiVencenzo going to Sacramento, per Woj.

Edit: Per Shams, Trey Lyles and Josh Jackson also headed to the Kings, and Ibaka is going to the Bucks, so maybe LAC is the fourth team here.

I hoped the Bucks would get back someone better than Serge if they decided to move Donte, but I understand why they did it. With the way he's playing now, Donte probably just isn't enough to get an actual good player.
   2628. jmurph Posted: February 10, 2022 at 11:52 AM (#6064614)
Dragic to San Antonio for Thaddeus Young. Nice move by Toronto.

There was reporting that Toronto was interested in Porzingis, but for hilarious reasons Dallas seems to believe they should be receiving assets in exchange for Porzingis. Which is, again, hilarious.
   2629. spivey Posted: February 10, 2022 at 11:54 AM (#6064616)
Agree with 2627. It sucks for the Bucks, but I also feel bad for Divincenzo. Isn't on the court for the championship run, then the injury and subsequent poor play is really going to cost him money. Just not a big market for his RFA rights. I don't even know what he'll get now.
   2630. jmurph Posted: February 10, 2022 at 11:59 AM (#6064620)
I like Ibaka for the Bucks. He's obviously well past it at this point but I think you can be comfortable putting him on the court in a big series for a few minutes.
   2631. spivey Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:00 PM (#6064621)
Sounds like the Bucks are getting 2 2nds as well. I guess that helps a bit? I've not really paid attention to Ibaka since the Toronto title team, but they did need better rim protection in case BroLo can't come back. Ibaka can hopefully still give that. Ibaka can also play in a 5 out setup, like BroLo/Portis. I think he's the right kind of player the team needed to get (besides a larger 3&D wing which wasn't realistic).

Edit: Sounds like Hood and Ojeleye are outgoing too. Man, Ojeleye has been awful this year. Like, I know Boston fans weren't a fan of his, but he's been much worse than that.
   2632. mike f Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:00 PM (#6064622)
@wojespn
ESPN Sources:
Full trade participants:
Kings: Donte DiVincenzo, Trey Lyles and Josh Jackson.
Bucks: Serge Ibaka, two future second-round picks, cash.
Clippers: Rodney Hood, Semi Ojele.
Pistons: Marvin Bagley Jr.
   2633. jmurph Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:01 PM (#6064623)
So the Spurs are going to buy out Dragic. They moved Thad Young just to save money and got absolutely nothing in return? That's incompetence.

EDIT: D'oh, thanks mike f (below), I got this wrong.
   2634. mike f Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:04 PM (#6064626)
Spurs also get a lottery protected first.

I’m in a boring meeting so I’m refreshing Twitter. Watching the details leak out between Shams and Woj is hilarious and so so dumb.
   2635. DCA Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:07 PM (#6064628)
I get that trade for SAC - they get useful players and dump Bagley - and for MIL - they get Ibaka + picks.

Maybe even for LAC - they save money.

WTF for Detroit?
   2636. tshipman Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:07 PM (#6064629)
I don't get the DiVincenzo deal. Is Marvin Bagley being evaluated as a positive asset? I'm moderately shocked that the Bucks dumped DiVincenzo for Ibaka, who is at least moderately cooked.
   2637. PJ Martinez Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:09 PM (#6064630)
Yeah, a first for Young is nice work by San Antonio. Kind of a lot to give up for him on Toronto's end, it seems to me.

Edit: Since San Antonio is sending Toronto a Detroit second, Toronto is essentially moving 15 or so spots. Still seems like a lot, given that Young is 33 and Toronto is not a title contender. They're also getting Drew Eubanks, whom I know nothing about, and saving money.

Sounds like Dragic will probably end up in Dallas.
   2638. spivey Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:11 PM (#6064631)
To me the writing was likely on the wall when they re-upped Allen in the pre-season for DiVincenzo. I thought that was stupid, but it's worked out reasonably well. Pretty sure they're a repeater tax team, they weren't going to pay the extreme premium to keep him. And he's been awful this year. I'm sure they were probably always planning to trade him this year, but were probably hoping to get way better value.

I don't love the deal, but I still pretty firmly believe that Milwaukee is best on defense and rebounding when they have a real center in the center spot and Giannis gets to be free safety. This helps with that if Lopez can't come back.
   2639. tshipman Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:13 PM (#6064632)
I like the Thad Young pickup in theory. He is capable of playing in the switchy system that Nurse likes to run, while adding rebounding and shotblocking. He's a ball mover on offense, and doesn't whine about shots.

I don't really know what the story is in SA, and why he wasn't playing for them. That would concern me, but I guess Toronto did their due diligence and didn't mind it.
   2640. spivey Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:16 PM (#6064634)
I like Young on Toronto too. They needed to get a little bigger/stronger for the matchups where that's required. They got that here. I think this makes them reasonably more versatile.

Toronto and Boston just seem full stop like better teams than Brooklyn. Even if that's not true, if Durant misses these next several games, they'll probably have a few game lead on Brooklyn with only like 20 games to go. It's hard to see a realistic way Brooklyn doesn't finish in the play-in at this point.
   2641. jmurph Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:16 PM (#6064635)

It's top 14 protected and then top 13 protected and then two 2nds, so that might be an actual 1st as soon as this year.

This move definitely signals that BroLo isn't coming back. I agree with everything you say, but I sort of wonder if Ibaka is that guy. Ibaka is playing 15 min a night for the Clippers, and is like their third center and they don't even want to play a center.

Maybe there are reasons why he wasn't playing that Milwaukee is okay with.

Edit: I had first round value on Donte, while I thought that Ibaka was basically dead contract. The deal is confusing to me, because it looks like DiVincenzo, Ibaka and Marvin Bagley are all being valued equally.

isn't he the rail thin 6'9 forward from west virginia that the lakers drafted in the 2nd round about a decade ago?

Quick thoughts before reading anything on these

1. Great job by the Spurs getting a first for Thad. They got a first in the deal to take him, and another to move him after not playing him.
2. I think Thad is a great fit in TOR and helps them a ton. I am a little surprised he cost a first, and guess that sets the bar high for the rest of the day.
3. I think the Kangz made a good trade. Getting value for Bagley after all that's happened is good, and they're buying low here.
4. Unless Ibaka turns back the clock some, MIL might regret that deal. Or does this just mean they're really pessimistic about Lopez coming back.
5. Bagley is worth a flyer for DET, and I don't think it cost them that much.
6. The Clips saved a ton of money against the tax.

Also P.J. Dozier. Celtics moved them to get under the tax. Maybe Schroder stays, or gets traded for an actual asset of some (modest) kind.

Edit: Apparently Orlando and Boston are swapping second-rounders in the deal, too.
   2647. jmurph Posted: February 10, 2022 at 12:46 PM (#6064644)
For the record I would prefer my extremely financially valuable favorite team spend allllllll the money to win.

That said, this is a massive tax year: teams under the tax are currently scheduled to get roughly $11 million payouts from the taxpaying teams, according to Bobby Marks. So I do get most teams trying to get under in order to take advantage of the proceeds from Brooklyn and Golden State (and a few others).

So Boston sends Juan Hernangomezmancherorichardo + $ to the Spurs, swap 2nd round picks with the Magic, and send them $, so they can get under the luxury tax after foolishly trading for Juancho?
   2649. jmurph Posted: February 10, 2022 at 01:04 PM (#6064649)
after foolishly trading for Juancho

Fair, but they traded two guys who aren't in the NBA anymore for Juancho, so they didn't lose much.

Woj says now on ESPN (live) that Harden negotiations are ongoing between the Nets and 76ers. "There's motivation on both sides."
Per source, there's a whole lot of optimism coming from the Ben Simmons camp that a deal with Brooklyn gets done.
(Second quote is from Sam Amick.)

We should be doing a final trade prediction thread. Simmons plus Green, is that it? There better at least be a host of convoluted pick swaps involved.

Oh, totally correct, just funny how guys can come and go. I like basketball and all, but man is it difficult to keep track of who is good, who isn't, who fits in certain systems, who is overrated, etc.

This move definitely signals that BroLo isn't coming back.

I don't think it signals much of anything. They could still use Ibaka if Brook comes back, they previously have only had 3 bigs they can trust.

It feels like they decided they needed to trade Donte for a Brook hedge, and took the best thing they could get, with aspirations (or discussions we haven't heard about yet) to use the two seconds to make another move.

Very good chance Miami or Milwaukee have to play Brooklyn in round 1. I think the Eastern Conference playoffs in general could be amazing.

Don't let this stop you, that's a pretty interesting deal too

What is the point of Patty Mills if you have Seth Curry?
2674. Moses Taylor loves a good maim Posted: February 10, 2022 at 01:24 PM (#6064674)
Very good chance Miami or Milwaukee have to play Brooklyn in round 1. I think the Eastern Conference in general could be amazing.

Prediction: I'm confident in Jrue or Lowry wearing Harden down over the course of a 7 game series.

Oh, the seeding can completely blow up my prediction. I don't trust Harden as far as anyone can throw him (you see, he's fat, so he can't be thrown that far), but it's not gonna get better than this year for Philly's chances. Embiid is gonna average 40+ this playoffs now, so they can hound away.

I was thinking about this. But, as a team they have a very low 3pt rate. They need to be taking more 3s. You can probably find minutes for both. Mills has always had problems playing over 25 minutes/game anyways due to the energy at which he plays.

You can play them both with Kyrie as long as KD is on the court. I don't think the Nets will, though.

Like, my biggest question mark about the Nets is 100% going to be the coaching staff.

Edit: Man, Miami must be salivating over this ... they now have fantastic matchups against everyone in the East.

What's the status of Simmons' fines? Has he still been claiming depression / mental illness has kept him from playing? If so, he can't suit up any time soon for the Nets, right?
   2678. asinwreck Posted: February 10, 2022 at 01:28 PM (#6064679)
Is Philadelphia keeping Millsap? Asking for an undersized Central Time Zone franchise.

Andre Drummond's Fungible Big Man tour continues.

I guess it could mean Joe Harris is out for the season?

Toronto and Boston just seem full stop like better teams than Brooklyn.
In the context of projecting results for the rest of the regular season, yes. I'm leery of saying more than that until we know how and when Durant comes back.

He hasn't been getting paid as far as I'm aware, and surely it's clear to everyone involved Klutch was cynically making all that other #### up in an effort to save face/money.

I wonder how you doubters feel about the DEAL ZONE now, huh?

Windhorst won out on Woj here, btw. That's a huge upset.

Adrian Wojnarowski @wojespn
The Nets will get the Sixers' 2022 first-round pick unprotected with a right to defer until 2023 and a 2027 first-round pick protected 1-to-8, sources tell ESPN. The 2027 pick would roll over to 2028 protected 1-to-8 again. The pick turns into two seconds and $2M in 2029.
2684. Moses Taylor loves a good maim Posted: February 10, 2022 at 01:31 PM (#6064685)
That right to defer is an interesting wrinkle. Might be worth doing for the Nets, all things considered.

Yes, I think this is certainly a reasonable reading of this.

This pretty much ##### the Sixers' ability to trade in the offseason, if I read it correctly.

Oh, the All Star game draft is tonight. Chance for some DRAMA there now.

Overheard in ESPN locker room after the James Harden trade:

“He got me,” Woj said of Windy's scoop over him. "That f***ing Windy boomed me."

Woj added, “He’s so good,” repeating it four times.

Woj then said he wanted to add Windhorst to the list of sources he quotes this summer.

The recent updates on Joe Harris were that he was hopeful he would not need more surgery. I wonder if the start of next season is in danger.

Local media over this losing streak constantly talking about how much the Harris injury derailed the offense. If one of these writers wants to do it, a Nets' version of The Worst Team Money Could Buy that links the Garnett Big 3 to Sean Marks building with young castoffs and savvy late 1st rounders to the KD-Kyrie-Harden Sixteen Game Big Three could be a hell of a book.

Whoa, per Shams:
The Boston Celtics are trading Josh Richardson to the San Antonio Spurs for Derrick White, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.
   2690. tshipman Posted: February 10, 2022 at 01:37 PM (#6064691)
I gotta give Morey credit. He went from Sacramento supposedly not being willing to include Haliburton in a trade to picking up Harden.

John Gonzalez @JohnGonzalez
Give me ALL THE FREE THROWS. Just 48 minutes of Embiid and Harden at the line
Rich Hoffman @rich_hofmann
So many takes to get off, but a quick one: Seth Curry has been a little rough lately but he was essential to the Sixers offense this year. Excellent chemistry with Embiid. This is the type of deal you can move him in. With James Harden, he would've become much less important.

Adam Himmelsbach @AdamHimmelsbach
Full trade, according to a league source: Josh Richardson, Romeo Langford, 2022 first-round pick protected 1-4, for Derrick White.

Ooooof. That might be an actual lottery pick for ####'s sake. What the hell.
   2696. tshipman Posted: February 10, 2022 at 01:44 PM (#6064698)
I think that's a good trade for Boston. You trade Richardson at the peak of his value while acquiring White at a low point of his. Richardson and White are roughly equivalent shooters despite the divergent results this year.

156 3pa doesn't make Richardson actually good from 3.

Edit: wait, didn't realize that there was a pick involved. Nevermind, back to a bad deal.

Ha you actually had me feeling good for a second!

If they get something for Schroder I'll feel fine. But I've never been a Derrick White fan.

Yeah, seems like a lot for White. I assume there's more happening, but I don't know if I'm going to like that, either...
