I estimate there are maybe 10-12 Primates left on this site, and they all post in the NBA thread.

Booker has developed into a hell of a player. Impressed with his passing and decision making out of the pick and roll. Seems like it consistently leads to a good shot.

Ben Simmons passing up that dunk is a good time to mention that he’s played 43 combined fourth-quarter minutes in Games 2 through 7 of this series — 6 total games. And he’s taken exactly ONE fourth-quarter shot in that time.

Maybe in terms of assets you give up but I don’t think he’s worth his salary. In a playoff series I think I’d rather have McCollum or Porzingis. And I don’t really like either of them.

Doc Rivers is now 15-29 when his team has a chance to clinch a playoff series.

If I were running the Trail Blazers, I'd do McCollum for Simmons. I'd try to get them to throw in someone/something else, but ultimately I think I'd pull the trigger.

If I were a Sixers fan, I'd be glad Morey is running things. I trust him more than the average GM.

Edit: Paul for Westbrook was bad, but I've assumed there were extenuating circumstances with that one.

If Morey actually could have traded for Simmons for Harden early this season and didn't, I wouldn't have much confidence in him.

I don't think Simmons is a top-3 player on a championship contender.

How do you imagine him working for a title contender? What position or role does he play?

offensively: draymond green.
defensively: not a problem.

simmons probably has to play next to another guard who can create off the dribble, score in isolation, and stretch defenses out to 25+ feet; someone like beal, lavine, mccollum, booker, kemba, murray, curry, lillard, kyrie, harden, etc.

use him to set high screens and get him rolling downhill towards the basket. ...and then you just hope that he doesn't disappear randomly in the playoffs because he's afraid to touch the ball.

I think you could turn him into a plus version of Draymond. I would try to use him as a ball mover in a motion offense that sets screens, cuts like a ############ and finishes. I actually think he would be a great fit next to Lillard.

Edit: coke to stiggles

draymond green

The other stuff, sure. But Dray never met a shot he didn't like. He's more talented than Green, so I really don't want to write him off. He's too expensive to experiment with, and you have to worry about his head now.

Draymond is the most intelligent team defender since, I don't know, Duncan? Simmons is an incredible one on one defender- mainly on wings- but I'm hesitant to assume anyone can do what Draymond does on defense.

I don't really see the offensive comparison. Simmons has shown basically no half-court skill.
   1776. PJ Martinez Posted: June 20, 2021 at 11:18 PM (#6025478)

Between 1991 and 2014, no team won a series while being outscored by at least 20 points over the course of the series. Since then, it's happened five times, including both East semifinals this year.

Also

Draymonds salaries going forward

$24 million
26
28

Simmons
33
36
38
40

So if the comparison holds and if you think Draymond is fairly paid, Simmons has ten million plus negative value

Draymond was a fine third player on a perfectly constructed team. As the second player, it was not good

Ben Simmons' inability to shoot is only part of the problem. Nobody is asking him to have a bag like KD or Steph's jumper. Dude needs to compensate for a lack of skill by staying aggressive. Russ & Giannis aren't great shooters but they always go hard. BS doesn't always bring it

   1783. jmurph Posted: June 20, 2021 at 11:35 PM (#6025487)
I don't follow the day to day enough, but I guess the question for me in these Simmons as Draymond-esque ideas is, is he okay coming off the ball? Will he still actually play hard and find ways to contribute on offense? For me the evidence points to no, he will not be able to find ways to contribute, but I'm by no means sure about that. He's ridiculously talented for a guy his size.
1784. Der-K's emotional investment is way up Posted: June 20, 2021 at 11:37 PM (#6025488)
This is tough because what Simmons was in that series, in these playoffs, isn’t exactly the same as what Simmons has been over his career. So:

I’m going to start by assuming that he’s not totally broken going forward. If he is then - oh boy.

On offense, he could be a Clint Capela in the halfcourt with serious vision (and less offensive rebounding) and he’s an obvious asset on defense. But he’s a weird enough player than you either have design your roster around him or you have to put him in a role that doesn’t maximize his strengths. This likely means - don’t have him on a championship level roster.

I’d gladly trade for him if I ran many clubs around the league (especially since this is when his value is low) but not unless I was rebuilding or wanted to take risks. (Someone on Twitter floated the unlikely move to OKC in a Kemba plus picks transaction, which would be wild.)

ATL/PHI: Hope Mike A and Der-K enjoyed it, and I like Stiggles reposting his own prediction.
Simmons: There was a short preseason discussion about whether the 76ers should include Simmons in a possible Harden deal. I said yes.
Embiid: He played as well as he could on one leg, but he looked bad late and it just draws a line under the earlier 1-2 discussion. Embiid needs a high-end scorer/creator with him. The Simmons/McCollum idea is interesting.
Coaching: Hollinger's preview of the WCF focused on the idea that Lue and Williams are "elite coaches" and his live tweets about the game focused on microtactics, as he called the game a "fun chess match." I do not see much in their records or on-floor that suggests to me that Lue and Williams are tactical wizards, (not sure who else is supposed to be--Carlisle, I suppose) but I didn't see that game. Lue has gotten and does deserve credit for putting Batum at the 5, but that is more personnel than tactics, although there is some overlap. I think both of them do appear to have good leadership skills. I did see the ATL/PHI game. I would question Atlanta's inbounds plays and Rivers' decision to go to Embiid, rather than Harris or Curry, late. But I think that both Rivers and McMillan are both good coaches overall. I think the keys to the game were Embiid being hobbled, Simmons' problems, and shotmaking from Huerter and Gallinari, taking up the slack for Young. Philadelphia is very good on D; you need to hit some tough shots to beat them. Those guys did.
Young: I was struck by how well he changes direction while dribbling.
Playoffs: The two healthiest teams made it to the ECF. Utah was healthier than LAC, but Mann and Morris blew up. Phoenix is the healthier team of the two in the West, so I think Leonard's knee injury sets up Milwaukee/Phoenix.
Lakers/Clippers/fans: Paul ending up there after the veto, and then the situation with George's, and then Leonard's, free agency, has made the Clippers Public Enemy #2, behind the Evil Green Men, for many Lakers fans. Ballmer's public persona also adds a cartoonish reason for Lakers fans to want the Clippers to lose. Clippers note: this is yet another team that Jerry West has been connected to that has found substantive success while he is there.

I non-trollishly don't understand how a single team with near term playoff aspirations could roll the dice on him after this. Someone like Orlando, Detroit, etc.? Sure.

Simmons for Fultz?

I actually kind of like the idea of him on the Wolves since KAT is so good from outside and could obviously use some help on defense. And a Russell for Simmons trade would be hilarious.

Yes to almost all of that, rr.

Oddity: only team left not in the top 5 in Ft% season is Milwaukee (lac 83.9, pho 83.4 were the top 2, atl 81.2 was fifth. Mil 76.0 was below average).

He's ridiculously talented for a guy his size.

wherever he winds up next year, he has no right to complain about his role after disappearing (again) in the postseason.
(Someone on Twitter floated the unlikely move to OKC in a Kemba plus picks transaction, which would be wild.)
the most unlikely part of that is OKC giving up picks; which is not to say they wouldn't need to, just that it's not their MO.

it’s one thing for fans to throw ben simmons under the bus. fans are fickle, irrational, reactionary and other things. and he deserves criticism! it’s weird to see his coach and top teammate do so. you never lose a series because of one player. that’s not how team sports work.
Tony Jones @Tjonesonthenba
Omg I don’t think I’ve seen a team air one of their guys out like what the Sixers are doing to Ben right now
James Edwards III @JLEdwardsIII
I love that no one in Philly is sugarcoating this. You can’t buddy-buddy what we saw.
Keith Smith @KeithSmithNBA
A couple more interviews tonight a d the Sixers will have to attach multiple first rounds to trade Ben Simmons. Pretty clear at least his coach and Joel Embiid are out.
Sean Highkin @highkin
Luckily Ben Simmons’ agent isn’t someone powerful or important who reps other big-name guys who will be free agents at some point so it’s probably fine that Doc and Embiid are airing him out like this

Yu Fu @YuFuTroy
Hawks' big man lineup with Clint + Gallo + Collins played incredible defense matching up 76ers' size. They played 54 mins together, mostly closing the games in this series. They had an 87.3 defensive rating and a+24.8 net rating. pic.twitter.com/8j9DMXTPxd

@Ben_Dowsett
It's not even a secret that Simmons is one of the biggest ######## in the league. Anyone who talks to anyone has been hearing it since his (2nd) rookie year (or seeing it personally). ####### to media, teammates, coaches.

This blame dump might just be starting. Could be epic.

Simmons: The guy has attempted 34 3s in his career, and hit 5, and his career FT% is .597. He was 0/1 on 3s and 25/73 at the line in this year's playoffs. To make it really work in postseason with those numbers in today's game you would have to be an "evolutionary" Shaq who could actually defend the PnR. When Simmons came out of LSU, he talked about Magic Johnson as a role model some--had a jersey, etc. When Magic was 20, some NBA people thought he couldn't shoot etc. thought the idea of a PG who was as big as a 4 was nuts. Sounds corny (and biased!) but some mentoring/pep talking/advice etc. from Magic might help Simmons a little.

Stiggles is right about pairing him with an offensive guard who could play on or off-ball; I also think you would need to put him with a stretch 5.

Playoffs:

Atlanta: Only title, 1958, in St. Louis. I think this is their second trip to the ECF since the merger.
Milwaukee: Only title, 1971. To give an idea of how long ago that was, they beat the Baltimore Bullets. Last Finals appearance, 1974, coming out of the West. Lost to Boston.
Clippers: Never before appeared in conference finals, either as the Clippers or the Buffalo Braves.
Phoenix: Have been in Finals twice--1976, lost to Boston, and 1993, lost to Chicago.

FT% of playoff teams: pretty noteworthy, I think.

Jrue was not good last series, but this is a series he can really make up for it. I'm hopeful he can play good defense on Trae, and he should be able to get to the paint and rim at will against Trae too.

Atlanta became pretty good once they got McMillan and Bogdanovic healthy.

Speaking of, kind of annoyed that Milwaukee messed up the under the table deal to get Bogdanovic this last offseason.

I wonder if Simmons recent struggles are problematic enough that he decides to switch hands with regards to shooting and/or shooting underhand free throws, from the ringer:

Simmons heavily favors his right hand on hook shots from the post, floaters, layups, and dunks. He’s a righty, and has far better touch with that hand. There is undeniably potential, which is why former coaches and teammates have encouraged him to make the switch. It’s up to Simmons whether he will explore the limits of his game or not.

Here’s the truth: Simmons is a reliable jumper away from being a modern Scottie Pippen. Maybe even Magic Johnson if he also becomes more confident. That’s what’s at stake here. Maybe switching hands won’t work, but there’s no downside to trying. He could not be any worse than he already is as a lefty.

I don't follow the NBA that closely but like tuning in this time of year. So...

Hang on, Simmons is right handed but plays left handed? He's not ####### Inigo Montoya for ####'s sake.

Simmons claims otherwise, but there have been rumors going back to LSU that he shoots with the wrong hand.
   1797. jmurph Posted: June 21, 2021 at 12:07 PM (#6025536)
I've never really been convinced by this theory. Even taking it at face value, he still learned how to shoot the way he learned how to shoot. He's been doing the same thing (albeit poorly) for his entire basketball playing life. Starting from scratch with a different hand doesn't strike me as the panacea that Kevin O'Connor is making it out to be.
1798. My name is Votto, and I love to get Moppo Posted: June 21, 2021 at 12:30 PM (#6025538)
jmurph, I agree, and Simmons shoots very well at the rim and better than average from floater range. That makes it so much more frustrating that he was so unwilling to shoot in this series.

What do the Bulls fans think of the LaVine for Simmons notion, being pushed by Hollinger et al?

I assume Chicago would want more; obviously, trading LaVine after the season he just had for Simmons after the playoffs he just had is tough, PR-wise. But it's not like the Bulls can just stand pat, either.

for what its worth, after a lifetime of doing maybe 20% of stuff lefty even though I was ostensibly a righty, i learned that i was changed from a lefty to a righty at age 2 by my dad because of old world superstition (i'm first gen).

it is NOT so easy as "welp, go back the other way". When I was a young buck I could dial pitches from my right hand up into the high-70s MPH; and yet I throw like a girl lefthanded. I tried to switch hit; I failed.

Sometimes, the circuitry you need to make the switch back is lost by the time you're an adult. So even though I'm cross eye dominant, I still shoot (guns) righty, because lefty is worse still. It's not really a fixable problem so much as you're permanently ###### up because you're doing it forever with the less capable side.
