NBA 2021 Playoffs+ thread

I estimate there are maybe 10-12 Primates left on this site, and they all post in the NBA thread.

It's after 6:00, and as Mike notes, we don't have all that much time before the actual draft starts. JJ1986, I can speak only for myself, but I have no objection to your proposed manner of proceeding.

It would be nice to hear yea or nay from more participants on the proposed method of proceeding.
   3203. DCA Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:12 PM (#6031074)
that's fine by me. spurs need a big, but it's a long way down the ESPN rankings to Isaiah Jackson and Tre Jones.
   3204. tshipman Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:14 PM (#6031075)
It would be franchise malpractice to draft a big in the lottery.

Vecenie has Kai Jones, a center, at 19.

tshipman, is that a yea to Davion Mitchell?
   3206. spivey 2 Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:20 PM (#6031078)
I agree we should draft for Thok. There've been 15 picks over several days, and need to be 45 picks in the next 24 hours.

I also think taking top available from ESPN/DraftExpress is the least objectionable way to do it.
   3207. tshipman Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:21 PM (#6031079)
tshipman, is that a yea to Davion Mitchell?

yes, I think Mitchell is fine.
   3208. Harlond Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:25 PM (#6031081)
There being no objection, the motion carries. San Antonio selects Davion Mitchell.
   3209. Harlond Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:25 PM (#6031082)
With the 13th pick, Indiana selects Franz Wagner.

I was going to take Mitchell with 14, so I have to consider.
3210. Der-K's emotional investment is way up Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:29 PM (#6031083)
I'd imagine Indy would be thrilled if he fell that far.
   3211. JJ1986 Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:29 PM (#6031084)
Ftr, I would have definitely picked Wagner if I were the Spurs.
   3212. Harlond Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:37 PM (#6031085)
With the 14th pick, Indiana selects Keon Johnson. Indiana was dreadful on defense, so both of these picks are guys who could excel at that, especially since I traded Turner. Plus I hear Wagner may have grown another inch.

spivey2 is on the clock for Washington.

Washington selects Trey Murphy III.

Washington is too bad to worry too much about fit, but really happy to get who Pelton grades as the best projected 3 point shooter in the draft who is also a long wing to play next to Simmons.
   3215. Harlond Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:58 PM (#6031089)
With the 16th pick, OKC selects Ziaire Williams. Willard on the clock for Memphis.
   3216. smileyy Posted: July 28, 2021 at 06:59 PM (#6031090)
Apparently it was some poor shooting from 2-point range from noted basketball great Robbie Hummel that contributed to the US not making the 3x3 Olympics. I probably shouldn't be quite so disparaging and also it speaks to the talent level that's opting to play for the US.

Also I definitely think it should be make-it-take-it.
   3217. DCA Posted: July 28, 2021 at 07:27 PM (#6031093)
Having finished drafting GSW, I can take LAC and/or Utah who appear to be ownerless.
   3218. Thok Posted: July 28, 2021 at 08:03 PM (#6031095)
Sorry for the delay; I can't post at work. I don't have an issue with the Davion Mitchell pick (the Spurs are basically in best player available mode right now.)
   3219. Harlond Posted: July 28, 2021 at 08:11 PM (#6031097)
DCA, that would be great.
   3220. Willard Baseball Posted: July 28, 2021 at 09:18 PM (#6031100)
Memphis selects Chris Duarte: He has a chance to be a plug/play 3 & D guy for a team with a shot at the playoffs. He can be in the rotation as a rookie, and has a chance to take Kyle Anderson role a year from now in the starting lineup. Didn't think I would be able to get him at 17, and he is older. But we need guys who can play right now, and I like his fit with Ja/JJJ.
   3221. . . . . . . Posted: July 28, 2021 at 09:24 PM (#6031101)
I’ll offer 21 and 32 to whoever has 16
3222. Der-K's emotional investment is way up Posted: July 28, 2021 at 09:30 PM (#6031102)
Do you mean 18? (same guy either way)
   3223. tshipman Posted: July 28, 2021 at 09:59 PM (#6031108)
'Zop must really like ... Jared Butler? Can't be the Gonzaga guy.
   3224. . . . . . . Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:07 PM (#6031109)
Do you mean 18? (same guy either way)

yes whatever
   3225. Harlond Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:08 PM (#6031110)
Yeah, that's me for OKC, and I've got 4 or 5 more picks in this draft. I need to consolidate my picks (which I'm doing a terrible job of so far), not increase them, so I'll say no.

With the 18th pick, OKC selects Jaden Springer.
   3226. tshipman Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:10 PM (#6031111)
Hmm ... there's a guy I really like at 19, but I could pick up an extra pick at 32.

I'll do the deal, 'Zop and take my chances that I can pick up my guy at 21. I don't think you're going to draft him, so that means I just have to dodge one more.

Edit: plus, as the Kings, it's not like I'm one player away.
3227. Der-K's emotional investment is way up Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:11 PM (#6031112)
I’ll trade 20 and 48 for 21 and 32
edit: sounds moot
   3228. . . . . . . Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:13 PM (#6031113)
I'll take Der-K's deal and pass up tshipman
   3229. tshipman Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:13 PM (#6031114)
Now I wonder if Der-K is targeting the same guy I am ...

edit: Oh, so it is Butler. Does that mean I should take him? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
   3230. tshipman Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:25 PM (#6031119)
After thinking for 10 minutes, I decided that taking someone to screw with someone is dirty pool. I started thinking, what if I'm taking Butler to #### with 'Zop, and then it's not even Butler. That would be peak KANGZ.

So the Kings draft Jalen Johnson, F, Duke at 19.
3231. Der-K's emotional investment is way up Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:27 PM (#6031120)
Hahaha. He was gonna be my pick when I had 20 but when the deal fell through, I thought you’d take him. High ceiling, low floor.
—-
Truly unrelated: 21 is available in trade…
   3232. . . . . . . Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:34 PM (#6031122)
with the 20th pick, the Knicks take Corey Kispert, justashooter, Gonzaga.

   3233. tshipman Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:37 PM (#6031123)
Hahaha. He was gonna be my pick when I had 20 but when the deal fell through, I thought you’d take him. High ceiling, low floor.

Yeah, I almost took him at 9 to be honest, but felt like that was too much of an overdraft, so I could take the chance and get him at 19.

Love the upside: he had 2.2 steals and 2.3 blocks per 40 min, which is really rare. You combine that with the high turnovers and assists (8.9 per 40), and you have a guy who could be a difference maker on offense and defense.

There are a lot of issues that mess with that: foot injuries are bad. His FT shooting and low 3p attempts paint him as a guy who will struggle to shoot, and allegedly he is maybe a headcase.

But whatever! Wings with star potential are super rare at this point.

***

Side note: Corey Kispert is really falling in our draft.
Edit: I guess he stopped falling, lol.
   3234. . . . . . . Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:40 PM (#6031124)
So far the Knicks are extremely pleased with how the draft is going. Once Moody was gone, we would've taken Kispert or Duarte with pretty much any pick. Kispert is justashooter, but also good in transition and should benefit from an NBA conditioning program. He's also older, has a good chance of being a rotation player in year one and a very good chance of generating surplus over his rookie contract.

Will the Knicks get lit up by any top team in a playoff series, you betcha. But recall our goal: to entice a good player to want to create surplus value by accepting less than FMV to join a fun, banging team in the Garden. The Knicks may only be regular-season-good next year, but they'll be good, and that's the best chance to improve further in 22-23.

Edit: And Kispert is a ######-a shooter. 6'7, and last year he was 88% from the line and 44% from 3P, with volume.
   3235. spivey 2 Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:47 PM (#6031126)
I like Jalen Johnson. Was my backup at 15. Young and very limited minutes, it’s easy to talk yourself into him improving the shot.
3236. Der-K's emotional investment is way up Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:50 PM (#6031128)
Whereas the draft went not so great for me - there’s only one guy taken above that I didn’t rank above my pick: Jared Butler, g, Baylor

The biggest needs in the short term are backup point and bench bigs. Butler has a lower ceiling than some, but should be a decent passer and ball handler, who can shoot off the dribble or as a catch and shoot guy + a plus defender in the mid-future. I also think statistical models might slightly underrate him, with Mitchell absorbing some backcourt responsibilities.

A big question with him is: how healthy is he? There’s no info available, afaik, about what issues he might have and in choosing to pretend that he doesn’t have any, seeing as I didn’t have a real plan for pick in this spot. (Kispert was my plan B)
   3237. tshipman Posted: July 28, 2021 at 10:58 PM (#6031129)
Kispert is old, but he's still somehow two years younger than Duarte.

I kinda go back and forth on Kispert. He looks a bit like the classic high floor, low ceiling prospect, although I'm not sure that either of those are true.

Things that I like: the shooting obviously, but he's a pretty decent finisher as well. He was at 63% from 2. A lot of that is due to the team around him and the conference, but it compares favorably to guys like JJ Redick or even Duncan Robinson. Kispert is also not a complete zero on the glass, unlike those guys. He has some size, and could maybe defend in the post. Has been a winner his whole life.

Things you don't love: His wingspan is tiny. He played with elite talent in college in a bad conference. He was kind of just a guy in the national championship game. You can blow by him on defense pretty easily, which means you can't really have him guard a lot of wings or smalls. Did I mention he's old?

Edit: to be clear, he's clearly draftable in this range, as he probably will go in the lottery IRL.
   3238. . . . . . . Posted: July 28, 2021 at 11:15 PM (#6031130)
I don’t think Kispert makes it to the Knicks at 19 IRL but if he did I’d hope they’d grab him. I think a little Thibs would be just the medicine to fill out Kispert’s game.
   3239. Thok Posted: July 28, 2021 at 11:20 PM (#6031132)
For what it's worth, I might have drafted Kispert for the Spurs given the chance.

Looks like Shohei and the Lakers are on the clock at 22.

Stiggles, is there anyone you're really high on? I'd deal 23 for 28 + Paul Reed.

Shohei, still looking to trade Kemba Walker if you have any interest.

Hey guys I just emailed Shohei that we are on the clock and have a couple of offers. Sorry for the delay, but I am only a consultant. Ha. I suggested that we take Duarte if we keep the pick, but I did not really think that he would still be there at 22, although he was in a few mocks. I have other suggestions for the pick as well.

   3245. . . . . . . Posted: July 29, 2021 at 07:22 AM (#6031152)
I’m 99% sure Duarte was picked already.
   3246. mike f Posted: July 29, 2021 at 08:18 AM (#6031153)

As the Duke fan on the board, Johnson was pretty uninspiring. He has some skill, but he definitely floated through games and was disengaged a lot. I can't truly blame anyone for prepping for the draft, especially in the COVID year, but when he was on the court, he did not do anything to stand out.
   3248. Ken Griffey's Grotesquely Swollen Jaw Posted: July 29, 2021 at 09:16 AM (#6031163)
if anybody in the back of the first here wants to trade back to #31 and pick up something nominal (the Bucks don't have much in the way of assets), I'm interested. I have a flight at 1pm central and would like to pick before then for everybody's sake.
3249. Der-K's emotional investment is way up Posted: July 29, 2021 at 09:29 AM (#6031164)

   3250. Ken Griffey's Grotesquely Swollen Jaw Posted: July 29, 2021 at 09:36 AM (#6031168)
I like Butler but that seems like an overpay, and I don't think the Bucks can trade next year's pick anyway-- they owe 2023 to Houston.
   3251. Crosseyed and Painless Posted: July 29, 2021 at 10:01 AM (#6031170)
League sources say teams continue to pepper the Pistons with offers for the no. 1 pick in hopes of selecting Cade Cunningham. As of late Wednesday night, executives around the league are still predicting that Detroit will stay put and draft Cunningham, but there is at least increased chatter about the possibility of a trade down, or an outright selection of Jalen Green. Green had an outstanding workout with Detroit last week that has, at the very least, left some front office members considering the possibilities. Still, Cunningham remains the favorite to have his name called first Thursday night.

From The Ringer. Think they are trying to give some Pistons fans I know a heart attack.
   3252. Harlond Posted: July 29, 2021 at 10:10 AM (#6031172)
rr, if we are to finish the first round at least before the actual draft starts, progress must continue. Can you pick at your earliest convenience?
3253. Der-K's emotional investment is way up Posted: July 29, 2021 at 10:13 AM (#6031173)
griffey: of course they can't oops.
man, you don't really have any small, fungible assets do you?
counter: i'll trade you butler for 31, plus your 2nds in 23, 24, 27 and the 2nd from indy in '25. that's a lot of 2nds, but still probably negative net value for me, per draft pick value charts - just trying to help with your flight.

real trade: nwo sold pick #53 to philly for $
   3254. Ken Griffey's Grotesquely Swollen Jaw Posted: July 29, 2021 at 10:22 AM (#6031175)
Der-K, that's a reasonable offer, are you willing to wait a few hours to see how the draft goes and whether it will be necessary?

Also I just realized my wallet fell out of my pocket at some point last night, so suddenly I have a few more things to do before this flight if I want to actually be allowed on it. dammit.

Is Trey Murphy really "Trey Murphy III?"

Does that mean the "III" is redundant and already covered by the nickname "Trey?"

Or is it an arithmetic sequence and he is the third "Trey Murphy III" in his family, meaning there was a "Trey Murphy Sr" and "Trey Murphy Jr" before him?

Why is draft stalled
3260. Dandy Little Glove Man Posted: July 29, 2021 at 12:04 PM (#6031196)
I think if there's no pick by 1:00 ET / 10:00 PT (nearly an hour from now), we should take the top player in the ESPN mock draft or some ranking -- or maybe rr becomes deputized to make the pick before then.

Re: 3258

I think the latter, though I am just using his name as listed on ESPN. Listening to pods, I've generally just heard him referred to in speech as Trey Murphy, though.
   3262. spivey 2 Posted: July 29, 2021 at 12:23 PM (#6031202)
As the Duke fan on the board, Johnson was pretty uninspiring. He has some skill, but he definitely floated through games and was disengaged a lot. I can't truly blame anyone for prepping for the draft, especially in the COVID year, but when he was on the court, he did not do anything to stand out.

That's interesting, because just looking at the stats - I didn't watch college basketball last year - he seems like way more of a stats stuffer than many guys. His blocks and steal numbers are well above average. His rebounds for a wing are strong. Assists and turnovers are high as well. Free throw rate seems solid, and points/minute isn't bad either.

Jason Dumas: "Source: The Sixers hope to trade Ben Simmons tonight. The asking price remains the same. The relationship seems to be over. It’s not a matter of if anymore, but when."

Kenneth "Trey" Murphy III (born June 18, 2000) is an American basketball player. He played college basketball for the Rice Owls and the Virginia Cavaliers.
3267. Dandy Little Glove Man Posted: July 29, 2021 at 12:38 PM (#6031208)
TFTIO, it seems like your Raptors roster is skewed toward bigs with Adams and Garuba joining the team. How about a deal for Boucher? I could slot him into my trade exception from the Ingram deal and open up some cap space for you to sign another guard/wing. I wouldn't give up a 1st rounder for 1 year of Boucher at $7M, but what about this:

TOR gets: #40 + NOP 2022 2nd rounder
NOP gets: #46 + Boucher

Do we.have a Utah? I'm interested in taking Derrick Favors into capspace along with the 30th pick in exchange for something small.

I've seen a lot of "Daryl Morey doesn't lose a lot of trades!" talk on twitter and I just want to point out that Daryl Morey has definitely lost a lot of trades. But man, god bless him if he pulls something like that off.

(He's obviously very accomplished, I'm not questioning that. He just has a lot of duds, which is probably inevitable given the volume of transactions he's been involved in.)

Looks like ESPN has Kai Jones (Big), Cam Thomas (Wing), and Bones Hyland (Guard) as the next 3 picks, depending on what the Lakers are in the market for.

all right, I'm about to board this flight. DerK, I'll accept the offer for Butler if Miles McBride isn't on the board when #31 comes up. If he is still available I'd rather just take him. I imagine there's probably value in sending this message secretly but whatever, I don't really have the time or inclination.

Either guy I think would provide good combo guard depth off the bench, which the Bucks might need quickly depending on Donte's recovery, or next year depending on Donte's contract expectations.
